Welcome to the August issue of Durham Tourism's Industry Insights!
We've arrived at that perfect time of year. Hot days, cooler nights, and still lots of summer fun to be had throughout the region. There are many business opportunities and sporting events taking place this month. The inaugural Epic Lake to Lake Adventure ride rolls through the region on August 26. We're also counting down to Culture Days --- --- make sure you register your free event on both the Durham Tourism and Culture Days websites.

Culture Days are coming!
Register your event now!
In 2016, more than 80 activities took place in Durham Region as part of Culture Days. This year, we hope this number continues to grow with even more members of our creative community joining in the festivities. Registering your Culture Days event is easy. Simply submit your event by visiting both
durhamtourism.ca and
culturedays.ca.
Now in its eighth year, Culture Days is a creative showcase now firmly entrenched in the national cultural calendar. Durham Region is proud to be a part of the three-day national celebration, which invites the public to explore, participate, and share in vibrant arts and culture events in every community across the country.
In 2016, Culture Days saw hundreds of thousands of artists and cultural organizations, in hundreds of cities and towns, come together to share their cultural spirit and passion. From coast to coast, in more than 900 Canadian communities, Culture Days events offered 7,500 free activities, with total attendance topping two million.

Spotlight on: Sir Monty's Brewing Company
Sir Monty's Brewing Company officially opened its pub-style taproom for business on
July 14 in Clarington. The brewery features a fine selection of craft beers brewed onsite, including a blonde, Kolsch, IPA, Irish red, milk stout, saison, Belgian golden ale and a bacon stout! These tasty craft beers are available for purchase at the fully licensed pub, which also offers delicious signature cocktails and an incredible smokehouse-inspired menu courtesy of Stuttering John's. The venue offers a warm, English Pub feel, where everyone is welcome.
The brewery, founded by Adam Perrin in 2016, is inspired by his now-departed pet dog Monty. Sir Monty's is located at 1540 Durham Regional Highway 2, Lower Level, in Courtice, and is open from noon to midnight, seven days a week. Stop by the pub, and eat, drink and be Monty!

Spotlight on: Butchie's Restaurant
There's a new kitchen in town, and they are serving up some
#DamnTastyFood!
Butchie's Restaurant officially opened in Whitby in
April 2017 and is the culinary brainchild of Top Chef Canada (Food Network Canada) All-Star Chef Andrea Nicholson.
Chef Andrea's passion for food is evident in every aspect of the restaurant, from her commitment to serving food that is locally sourced and produced, without any antibiotics or hormones, to the local products, such as Geissberger Farmhouse Cider, featured through Butchie's menu and specials since their opening.
Speaking of the menu
---it features down-home delicacies such as Smoked Pork Sandwiches, Country Fried Steak and Hush Puppies. Specials such as Smoked St. Louis Ribs and Nashville Hot Chicken are announced daily through
Butchie's Facebook page. Lighter fare includes a daily sustainable fish and Butchie's House Greens
--- yum! Pie, 12 flavours of Kawartha Dairy ice cream, and shakes round out the dessert menu.
Butchie's offers a unique and innovative Meat+three menu (a protein plus three sides), and is also a gluten free destination, with more than 85 per cent of their menu gluten free and celiac safe! The restaurant also provides private, corporate and full-service catering, and delivery is available through the web service at
SkipTheDishes.com.
Butchie's is located at 939 Dundas Street West in Whitby, on more than 1.5 acres of conserved green space. This is one culinary adventure to put on your summer bucket list!

Getting ready to roll out the red carpet for DRIFF
The 2017 Durham Region International Film Festival (DRIFF), taking place September 18 to 24, is seven days of carefully selected films, industry workshops and a one-of-a-kind movie making experience at Docville's Wild West movie set.
Community and brand exposure for local businesses is part of the interactive experience at the festival, whether it's at red carpet events, gala films or industry workshops.
Taking full advantage of Durham's cultural landscape, films will screen at Landmark Theatre in Whitby, the Regent Theatre in Oshawa, Docville's Wild West movie set in Clarington and Ajax's historical St. Francis Centre for Community, Arts & Culture, with industry seminars at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery. DRIFF is a local non-profit dedicated to promoting arts, culture and community in the region. The festival not only showcases great films, but puts an emphasis on community involvement.

Keep these upcoming sport events on your radar!
Take advantage of Sport Durham's monthly sport events radar, to ensure that your business is prepared to welcome incoming athletes and visitors to Durham Region during key sporting events!
Keep the following events on your radar for this month:
- Canadian Superbike Doubleheader Weekend, August 18 to 20, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Bowmanville; National Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship, national classes, including Pro Sport Bike, Amateur Superbike, Amateur Sports Bike and the Kawasaki Ninja 300 Racing Series; and BMW Motorrad Days. Expected weekend attendance of approximately 30,000.
- Chevrolet Silverado, September 1 to 3, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Bowmanville; NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Pinty's Series, Canadian Touring Car Championship and much more! Expected weekend attendance of approximately 74,000.

An epic ride is rolling through Durham
The Epic Lake to Lake Adventure Ride is rolling through Durham on August 26. This inaugural bike ride will see cyclists travel The Great Trail through Durham from Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario, in celebration of Canada's 150th. Cyclists can participate in this "epic" adventure by signing up at www.townshipofbrock.ca/L2L, or register to become a volunteer.
The ride is a collaborative partnership among the Town of Ajax, Township of Brock, City of Pickering, Township of Scugog, Township of Uxbridge, and Durham Region's Cycle Durham and Sport Durham programs. The ride will begin at Beaverton Harbour, with stops along the way in Cannington, Uxbridge, Blackwater, and the Pickering Museum Village. The ride ends at Rotary Park in Ajax.

Corporate Sponsorship Workshop
Sport Durham and Central Counties Tourism are
hosting
a Corporate Sponsorship Workshop on October 19. This training will focus on strategies to maximize revenue for regional events
and sport hosting
, lowering the financial burden for host cities.
The workshop's goal is to empower staff, leading to an increase in overall revenue generated from events of all kinds, including sporting events.
The training will help participants grow confidence in bidding for events and provide an open resource for municipalities.Training concepts include:
- How to drive paid attendance.
- Corporate sponsorship contribution.
- Effective event marketing.
- Digital media with a purpose.
- Sales and negotiation training.
The workshop is one full day at the Ajax Convention Centre (located at Highway 401 and Salem Road), as well as post-training access to 10 weekly webinars.
The cost is $25 per person, and includes light breakfast, breaks and lunch. Register online at centralcounties.ca.
