Member Appreciation Spotlight: Mark Gale, Awarded NAMI National's Sam Cochran Criminal Justice Award
|
From Left to Right: Mark Gale and Major Sam Cochran |
This award, named after the founder of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program, recognizes outstanding work in the criminal justice system to deal fairly and humanely with people living with mental illness. NAMI proudly recognizes Mark Gale, Criminal Justice Chair of the NAMI Los Angeles County Council.
Mark Gale was awarded NAMI National's Sam Cochran Criminal Justice Award at 2017 NAMI Conference last month. Betty Whiton, from NAMI Albuquerque (who worked with Mark to refine Albuquerque's CIT training), nominated him. What an honor to receive the Sam Cochran award and for Major Sam Cochran to present the award to Mark in person himself!
Mark represents NAMI on the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Criminal Justice Mental Health Advisory Board, is a member of the Permanent Steering Committee of the Office of Diversion and Reentry and leads the NAMI CIT partnership with law enforcement in Los Angeles County. Mark represented NAMI on the Judicial Council's Task Force for Criminal Justice Collaboration on Mental Health Issues and was recently appointed to the Collaborative Justice Courts Advisory Committee.
You can click here for more details on his award, but each of us know how deeply Mark is committed to changing the landscape for people with mental illness who are involved in the criminal justice system.

Please help celebrate Mark by spreading this great news and thanking him for his efforts in criminal justice reform.

NAMI Advocacy: Senate Vote on Motion to Proceed
The Future of Mental Health Coverage is at Stake!
Senate Takes Dangerous Step Toward Dismantling Mental Health Coverage for Millions
On July 25th, 2017 the Senate voted to open debate on health reform by passing a Motion to Proceed by 51-50, with Vice President Pence casting the tie-breaking vote. This paves the way for the Senate to vote on a health reform bill later this week.
To date, Senate proposals have included provisions that would devastate Medicaid, a lifeline for people with serious mental illness, and provisions that would take us back to a time when:
- People were denied insurance coverage, charged more or turned down for renewal just because they had a mental health condition;
- People had yearly or lifetime limits on mental health care; and
- Nearly 4 in 10 individual health insurance plans did not cover mental health treatment.
You didn't elect your Senators to dismantle mental health coverage for millions of Americans.
No one with a mental health condition should ever be in danger of losing their mental health coverage.
No one with a mental health condition should be forced to wait for basic care or not be able to get needed medications or treatment.
No one with a mental health condition should end up on the streets or in the back of a police car because Congress voted to strip away mental health coverage.
No matter how many times you have contacted your Senators before, reach out TODAY. Tell your Senators to vote NO on any health reform bill that fails people with mental illness.
As Congress debates, we're asking NAMI advocates to speak up. The next few days are critical and you can help.
What to do over the next 72 hours:
- Send an alert to your members
- Tweet directly at your Senators
- Post on social media
Tweet at your Senators, call (202) 224-3121 or email now.
