Here Comes Old Spanish Days!
"Old" Spanish Days indeed - at 93 years (since 1924), our beloved celebration of Santa Barbara's Hispanic heritage is going strong and gearing up for another amazing year. We all have our favorite events, locations, moments and traditions of Fiesta. Maybe you're excited to kick off Fiesta Week with that wild party we like to call "DIGS!" (Celebraction de los Dignatariós, Thu, Aug 3). When you're partying at the Santa Barbara Zoo, you're wine'ing and dine'ing among some real animals.
Maybe your passion is for the multitude of performances - dancers and musicians abound this week, on stage at the mercados, Paseo Nuevo Center Court, at the Courthouse Sunken Gardens for Las Nochas de Ronda, during La Fiesta Pequeña at the Old Mission, mariachis strolling sidewalks, even State Street offices and board rooms hosting the talented Spirit and Junior Spirit of Fiesta.

Grammy Award winning all female ensemble, Mariachi Divas. |
There really is something for everyone during Fiesta - professional rodeo, special masses at Old Mission Santa Barbara, once-a-year food and drink delights at El Mercado de la Guerra and El Mercado del Norte, awe-inspiring ceremonies, fun of all types for kids of all ages, historical tours of the Courthouse and Mission, Fiesta art exhibits and don't forget Casa Cantina at Casa de la Guerra where it all began (noon to midnight)!
And if you're a fan of a fabulous parade (and horses), you're in the right place! Two parades (El Desfile Histórico and El Desfile de los Niños) bring pageantry, costumes, dancers, floats, horses and more horses, for two days along State Street.
Old Spanish Days - Fiesta is a community celebration, so it's only fitting that Fiesta La Presidente Rhonda Ledson Henderson chose "Unity Through Community" as this year's theme.
Viva la Fiesta!

Non-Profits to Know:
Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation
"Moms. Dads
. Brothers Sisters. We support the entire family when a child has cancer."
Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation was inspired by a three-year-old boy with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer and brain tumor diagnoses. One day, his mother broke down as she shared the hardships she and her family faced while caring for her sick child. She spoke of unplanned and extended hospital stays, as well as expensive medications, which sometimes exceeded $1,000 after insurance. She also shared the dilemma of needing to give up her income in order to care for her sick son, and be able to accompany him during hospital stays.
Mostly, she faced the fear of not knowing whether her son would relapse again or even survive. She shared that her family was seemingly drowning without the knowledge of available support to help them during this difficult time.
After this conversation, Founder Nikki Katz realized the great need for a support system for families with children suffering from cancer on the Central Coast. In 2002, with the determination to assist families through their battle with cancer, Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation was born.
