Portrayals as Training Tools

The ways in which individuals and groups are portrayed in popular media can have a profound effect on how they are viewed by society at large. This resource represents an attempt to catalog the representation of people with disabilities in motion pictures. The IRIS Center offers a  searchable webpage to locate portrayals of people with disabilities in movies and film.

While no footage exists on this page itself, it informs you of where to locate it.  While some of the footage you locate may be disrespectful or incorrect (the site is careful to point this out and not to endorse any of the portrayals), it still offers fodder for great discussion.  Use leads you receive from it to engage your training audiences in discussion, activities and assignments.  Youth, in particular, respond to using current day media as a training tool.
Outcome: Enhancing your center's ability to better reach and effectively serve families in your target population.
