A Bit About our Trainings

NaBITA is committed to keeping teams trained across the country on a variety and scope of issues. NaBITA offers four certification courses to ensure your BIT is well-trained and prepared:

This is our core course that offers a review of the three phases of BIT (gathering data, applying a rubric, and interventions). We discuss mission statements, membership of the team, marketing, developing a team manual and offer an overview of the NaBITA tool. We review the practical side of application with a discussion and viewing of the video tool Window Into BIT. This course is ideal for those new to BIT or new to the NaBITA model.

This course offers a more detailed dive into team formation, marketing and the NaBITA tool. Advanced topics such as addressing protests and microaggressions on campus, developing an awareness of blind spots and hazards for growing teams, and a deeper dive into social media threat assessment is covered. This course is ideal for teams that have been in existence for several years and have some familiarity with NaBITA trainings and materials.

Once behavior has been labeled and give a risk rating, what techniques and approaches are useful in managing students on campus? This training offers basic counseling, mentoring, and case management skills to those who are tasked with intervening with at-risk students. Management of suicidal and potentially violent students, and those struggling with mental health difficulties on campus, is also reviewed. This course is ideal for anyone responsible for intervention and managing at-risk students on campus, including: resident directors, case managers, front office staff, advisors, police, and BIT members.

Here, we bring together all four tools developed by NaBITA to label and mitigate risk on campus. These include the NaBITA threat assessment tool, The Violence Risk Assessment of the Written Word (VRAW2), The Structured Interview for Violence Risk Assessment (SIVRA-35) and The Radicalization Risk Rubric (R3). This course is designed to help team member gain a proficiency in each of the four tools.

The newest training is being developed and tested at the 2017 Annual Conference by Advisory Board member David Denino, LPC, NCC. This course focuses on recognizing suicide warning signs, safety assessment, and safety planning for students. As part of a comprehensive campus program to prevent suicide, PASS training can help those who have suicidal thoughts and other mental health issues. This training will be ideal for BIT members looking to learn more about suicide prevention and best practices related to managing mental health crisis on campus.
