Dear resident,

Thank you for your support. I invite you to read this month's newsletter to be informed of matters that concern you as well as community events in your area. Miami-Dade County will be holding several public meeting in the community  on Tuesday, August 22 and Thursday, August 24, starting at 6pm to address any questions regarding the FY 2017-18 Proposed Budget .

In addition, on August 23, Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez will also be holding two sessions using Facebook and Twitter to address any questions or concerns on the budget. 
First Veteran completes Miami-Dade Veterans Treatment Court
 

Congratulations to Michael Schimek for being the first veteran to complete the Miami-Dade Veterans Treatment Court on July 19. The Veterans Treatment Court officially launched on January 2017 and diverts veterans from traditional criminal justice system and provides them with the tools needed to successfully reintergrate back into civilian life, including substance abuse treatment, vocational training and housing from the Veterans Administration.

On July 8, Commissioner Diaz who served in the United States Marine Corps., and is  Miami-Dade County's Military Liaison, was honored to be at the unveiling of the improved military lounge at Miami International Airport. The lounge is for active and former members of the Armed Forces and their families when traveling. The newly renovated "All-Star Military Hospitality Lounge at Miami International Airport was made possible by Major League Baseball and the Miami Marlins.    
Get Ready for Back to School Holiday Tax


Pretty soon the children will be going back to school and Commissioner Diaz wants to remind all parents to take advantage of the Back to School Tax Holiday , which starts August 4-6.

Newsworthy Items for the Community

Age-Friendly Initiative  
The Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative is conducting a survey among residents age 50 and over to understand the community's views and how to make Miami-Dade a great place to live, work, and play. Responses will be shared with residents, partners, stakeholders, and community leaders, and will help inform an update to our Age-Friendly Action Plan.

Free Small Claims Court Presentation
The Miami-Dade County Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER) and the Office of Consumer Protection, will host a free Small Claims Court presentation at noon, Thursday, August 3, at the John D. Campbell Agricultural Center in Homestead.

Sign up for Senior Summer Camp
Seniors age 60 or older can enjoy their summer at Senior Strong Summer Camp. Activities include field trips, dancing, health and nutrition seminars. For more information on the program, please call 786-469-4707.

Clear the Shelter Event on August 19
Join Miami-Dade Animal Services, NBC 6, Telemundo 51 and shelters across South Florida to help every shelter pet find a forever home during the third annual Clear the Shelters nationwide pet adoption event on August 19th.

Looking to do things on your stay vacation? Now through September 30, you can get unlimited visits to Zoo Miami, Miami Seaquarium and other local attractions through the Summer Savings Pass.

Hurricane Season is here and now is the time to stock up on hurricane supplies. Be sure to plan ahead with the help of the 2017 Hurricane Guide.
 
Consumer Protection
Have a complaint against a business? The Office of Consumer Protection enforces consumer protection laws under Miami-Dade County's Uniform Trade Standards and Deceptive Trade Practices Ordinance, as well as regulates and enforces laws relating to specific industries. The Consumer Mediation Center investigates a variety of consumer complaints, mediates disputes between consumers and businesses, and educates consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities in order to maintain a vibrant local marketplace. Palmetto Express Way Closures and Detours
If you travel on the Palmetto Express Way, please be aware there will be closures and detours at the exit ramp from SR 826/Palmetto Expressway northbound to NW 103 Street/West 49 Street. The closures and detours start 11 p.m. on August 4 until August 7 at 5 a.m.

Commissioner Diaz at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce's 30th Annual Military Service Person of the Year Awards on July 12.
Commissioner Diaz attends the unveiling of the Veterans designated parking initiative at A.D. Barnes on July 14.

Commissioner Diaz presents a proclamation to Roberto Capo from El Dorado Furniture for their 50 years in our community on July 18th at the Board of County Commission meeting.


On July 18, Commissioner Diaz sponsored legislation to rename NW 107 Avenue from NW 138th Street South to Okeechobee Road as "Brigade 2506 Boulevard" in honor of the Brigade members.
Free Zumba classes at North Trail Park

The Miami-Dade County Parks, as part of their health and fitness initiative, will be offering free "Zumba Gold" classes to residents age 55 and older at North Trail Park Community Center, 780 NW 127th Avenue.  "Zumba Gold" mingles fun and energetic music with lower impact movements to improve balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and muscle conditioning. SR 836/826 Construction

On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the State Road (S.R.) 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and S.R. 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange. Now that construction has begun, there will be many upcoming lane and ramp closures on the Dolphin Expressway.
