This year we will reflect on what it means to belong to the Christian community past, present, and future, one each trimester. We will also be raising awareness and helping three different missions - Matthew House, Food Bank, Quarters for Calcutta. Serving one another is just part of showing to whom we belong.
Weekly Chapels are held at 8:35 on Fridays at NHF. Parents are always welcome to join!

The administration and teachers are excited to begin the new school year! Please welcome back Miss Amanda Smeenk, who will be teaching 3rd grade! Our 1st and 2nd grade classes remain smaller this year, and
Mrs. Bailly will be teaching this combination 1
st
and 2nd grade class. Mrs. Sytsma enjoyed the Kindergarteners so much last year, she's teaching Kindergarten again this year. We are looking forward to an awesome year!

MEET-THE-TEACHER DAY and NEW PARENT MEETING:
THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m
.
Meet-the-Teacher is open house-style, so come by any time between 4:00 and 7:00 (Returning families, please note the change in time). The New Parent Meeting is 6:30-7:00 p.m., and parents will leave their child/ren in the classroom with the teacher for this meeting.
STUDENTS - Bring your supplies, see your friends, meet your new teacher, and choose your new t-shirt size. (Parents, please remain at the school with your child.)
PARENTS - The students wear their theme t-shirts to Chapel every Friday and on classroom service project days and field trips. The cost for students is included in tuition. Due to printing restrictions, August 31st is the one and only opportunity to order your child's shirt, possibly an extra shirt, and shirts for parents, if desired. Shirts are $10 for non-student or extra student shirts, and payment is due the same day.
Only paid orders will be processed, so come prepared with cash or check (credit or debit if over $20)
. This is the only day we can take orders!

ALL HANDS ON DECK!
Are you available on Saturday, August 12, at 9:00? Gloria Werkhoven, lead of Building and Grounds, has planned for a big day for us. These are some the tasks that we would like to accomplish: pressure wash the preschool play gym, pressure wash the exterior of the school, hang blinds, remove a tree, wash all the windows, make a dump run, place some items in the attic... the list is long - many of the supplies will be provided. Whether you can help for an hour or more, you are welcome! Help get our school ready for the new school year, hang out with some remarkable people, and earn service hours, too! FAIR DAYS PARADE
The City of Monroe is hosting their 80
th annual Monroe Fair Days Parade on August 26.
Our plan is to walk in the parade wearing MCS apparel.
Students who have been on any sport's teams can borrow uniforms the morning of the parade. Cheer girls, please wear you Cheer uniform!
The parade begins at 11:00, and the line-up is in front of Park Place Middle School. P
lease arrive between 8:30-10:00. Because the parade route on Main Street will be closed from 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., parking at the school will unfortunately not be an option.
This year's theme for the parade is "Harvest the Memories." Plan on joining us and making family memories of your own. We want our community to know that we are here and supportive. In addition, we want other families to know about our mission to engage, equip, and empower our students for lives that are transformative and fulfilling.

WALK-A-THON
Our 10th annual Walk-A-Thon is happening on Friday, September 29th, at Lake Tye Park. This is one of MCS's major fundraisers which help us keep tuition as reasonable as possible. Each family is asked to send out 15 (or more!) letters to individuals and businesses that they think would be willing to financially support Monroe Christian School through a donation. You can also send letters via email. In preparation,
please gather your list of names and addresses and/or email addresses prior to the start of school.
Would you like to get a head start on sending letters out? Below is the link for the donation request letter you can send out digitally. Please keep track of how many you send out, so we can keep our classroom count accurate. If you prefer to mail the letter, packets will be available for you on Meet-the-Teacher Day (Aug. 31).
On
Friday, September 29
, we meet at Lake Tye Park in Monroe immediately after school (no E-Care that day), and each class will walk around the lake with their teacher and families. We will have hotdogs and treats, too! This is a great event for fellowship and getting to know each other better, and the kids love it!

CURRICULUM-PARENT NIGHT: Tuesday, September 12, 6:30 p.m., at New Hope Fellowship
ALL parents are asked to attend Curriculum-Parent Night, with all parents meeting at New Hope Fellowship at 6:30. New information will be presented by the Board, so please come! After this brief all-parent meeting, everyone will cross the street to the school, where you will go to the individual classrooms at designated session times.

SPORTS NEWS
MCS Co-Ed SOCCER CAMP: In preparation for soccer season, Coach Stima will be holding a Soccer Camp for 5th-8th grade MCS students on August 15, 16, and 17, 9:30-12:00, here at MCS. Parents, you will be completing forms when you arrive on the first day. The camp is free to MCS students. Students need to wear appropriate attire and bring water, a snack, and shin guards. To qualify for a chance to win a bike in the drawing in the fall, students need to meet or exceed the reading minute goals shown below for their grade in 2017-18. Teachers will collect names of qualifying students on the first day of school.
- PS - 1st grade 1,000 minutes
- 2nd grade 1,500 minutes
- 3rd grade 2,000 minutes
- 4th-5th grade 2,500 minutes
- 6th-8th grade 3,000 minutes

LOVE & LOGIC - FINAL WEEKS OF SUMMER
As much as many kids are reluctant to admit it, a new school year is just around the corner. We're already seeing the back-to-school ads on television and many websites.
What can we as Love and Logic parents do right now, during these final weeks of summer, to help our kids enjoy the best academic success when they return to class? The answer may surprise some of you: Ensure that our kids are contributing to the family by consistently helping with housework, yard work, and other duties.
Kids in the habit of successfully completing chores are far more likely to develop a habit of successfully completing academic assignments
.
Low self-esteem and entitlement go hand in hand. Both equal low achievement motivation.
To prevent this from happening... or to begin the process of healing... follow Love and Logic's ABC's for training kids to do chores:
A: Assign every member of your family some meaningful contributions.
Ask yourself, "What am I doing that my kids could do on a regular basis?"
Many parents find it helpful to post this list on the refrigerator complete with names next to each contribution.
Caution: Don't say, "Do it now." This just creates power struggles. Instead, allow them to have a deadline for each contribution.
B: Be quiet.
Avoid reminding or nagging. Remember: Kids who have to be nagged into doing their chores are kids who need to be nagged into doing their schoolwork and homework.
C: Consequences preceded by sincere empathy will do the teaching.
When their children refuse to do their chores, forget, or do them haphazardly, many parents find it helpful to complete the chore for their child... and expect their child to repay the time and energy expended to accomplish those contributions.
Sometimes this means doing extra chores for the parent. Sometimes this means staying home or doing without some privilege so that the parent has time to rest and relax. Other times this means paying the parent or a professional to do the job. A memorable example involved a teen who had to pay a maid service to complete her housework contributions.
The key to success hinges on sincere empathy! Remember: Anger and frustration create resentment, while sincere empathy creates responsibility.
