Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay
|
Tuesday, July 18 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Rockville Science Center, Science Cafés
Summertime Blues: Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay
Speaker: Dr. Tom Miller, Director of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Chesapeake Biological Laboratory.
Blue crab is an iconic species in the Chesapeake Bay that has supported important commercial and recreational fisheries that have come to define the region. Despite its importance, managing blue crab production continues to challenge us. Why? In this talk, Dr. Miller will show how differences in ecology of blue crab in different jurisdictions and how uncertainty over key estimates complicates management. Looking to the future, Dr. Miller will explore how crabs may fare in a changing climate.
Dr. Thomas Miller is a fisheries scientist and Director of the Ches
a
peake Biological Laboratory in Solomons, MD. For the
past 25 years, he has been conducting work o
n the ecology and
management of blue crab in the Chesapeake Bay. His work is
used to inform current management and to identify the
challenges it may face in the future.

The Rockville Science Center held our 2017 Appreciation Event in June at the Rockville Senior Center. Special guests in attendance were the Honorable Bridg
et Newton, Mayor of the City of Rockville, and Councilmembers Virginia D. Onley and Mark Pierzchala.
We recognized our many members, volunteers, donors, and staff for their contributions to the Science Center. The Honorable Phyllis Marcuccio, former Mayor of the City of Rockville, and Trustee
of the Rockville Science Center, was recognized for her many years of service. Howard Kimel, CEO of Precision Laboratories, was recognized for his generous contribution to the center. Both were pres
ented with lifetime membership at the Rockville Science Center and a custom embroidered t-shirt.
This is an annual event. We encourage all Rockville Science Center contributors
and volunteers to become members. Financial support from our members and donors help to sustain our education and outreach programs. Our goal is to make a Rockville Science Center facility a reality.
