Margaret Walker Center - Jackson, MS
Margaret Walker, an African American poet and novelist, was a central figure in American and African American literature during the 20th century.  After earning her BA at Northwestern, she was a member of the Southside Writers' Group. She received her MA from the Iowa Writers Workshop and her thesis became the book of poetry, For My People, which won the 1942 Yale Younger Poet's Prize.  In 1966 her neo-slave novel Jubilee was published.  She taught at Jackson State University (JSU) from 1949-1979 and founded the Institute for the Study of the History, Life and Culture of Black People, which was renamed in her honor as the Margaret Walker Center which occupies Ayer Hall, the oldest building at JSU.
