Coach  Frank Broyles , a 1983 College Football Hall of Fame inductee who led the program at Arkansas from 1958-76 after one season at Missouri in 1957, passed away Aug. 14 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Born Dec. 26, 1924, he was 92. Broyles also served as Arkansas' athletics director from 1973-2007, and was honored with the NFF John L. Toner Award in 2000.

Broyles arrived in Fayetteville in December 1957, beginning a more than five-decade affiliation with the University of Arkansas and the Razorbacks as a coach and athletics administrator. In the 19 years prior to his arrival in Fayetteville, Arkansas had recorded only five winning seasons and appeared in just one bowl game. In 19 seasons (1958-76) as the Razorbacks' head football coach, Broyles amassed a record of 144-58-5, seven Southwest Conference (SWC) titles, 10 bowl bids, 20 All-Americans and 88 All-SWC selections.

In 1964, Broyles led the Razorback football team to an undefeated season that culminated in a 10-7 win over Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl. The National Championship was awarded to the Razorbacks by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) following the bowl games. The Cotton Bowl was part of a school record 22-game winning streak launched in the final game of the 1963 season and ending in the 1966 Cotton Bowl.
Former Syracuse and UMass head coach Dick MacPherson, a 2009 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, passed away Aug. 8. He was 86.

MacPherson guided the Syracuse football team to an undefeated season in 1987 and five bowl games in 10 seasons as head coach. "Coach Mac" arrived at Syracuse in 1981 and built the football program into a national championship contender during his tenure. His Syracuse teams produced a 66-46-4 (.586) record, including a 4-1 mark in bowl competition and ranking as high as fourth in the national polls.

At UMass, MacPherson led the Minutemen to four Yankee Conference titles in seven years. His 45 victories at Massachusetts rank him third all-time in school history, and his 28-8-1 mark in Yankee Conference games notches a .778 winning percentage, which places him fifth in league history.

Sideline Behavior: A Point of Emphasis
Rogers Redding
Rogers Redding, the national coordinator of College Football Officiating, provides insights about rules changes and the mindset of college football referees. The CFO is the national professional organization for all football officials who work games at the collegiate level.

Over the past few years, the NCAA football rules committee has become increasingly concerned about the way some coaches behave on the sidelines. While the vast majority of coaches cause no problems, a small number continue to come on to the field to vigorously protest an officiating decision or for other negative reasons.

The committee's concern is that these histrionic acts of poor sportsmanship are bad for the image of the game. While the rulebook clearly prohibits coaches from coming onto the field during the game, enforcement of these rules over the recent past has been spotty at best, further leading to an erosion of sideline behavior.

Last year, the committee added a rule saying that a coach who commits two unsportsmanlike conduct fouls is disqualified from the game and must leave the playing enclosure. This "two-strikes-and-out" rule as applied to players has been in place for many years, but until 2016 there was not a comparable rule for coaches.

With the addition of this disqualifying rule last year, the committee feels that the rules currently in place are appropriate and do not need to be changed. Instead, for 2017 the committee is making coach behavior on the sideline a point of emphasis. The officiating community has been charged with its relevant responsibility for enforcing the current rules. Specifically, the rule says that "coaches who enter the field of play to question, protest, or otherwise demonstrate disagreement with an officiating decision are subject to an immediate 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct."

Since the rules committee meeting in March, this point of emphasis has been broadly communicated to head coaches, conference commissioners and football administrators, officiating coordinators, officials, etc., so that when opening kickoff comes in late August, there will be no surprises. The rules committee, the officials and the other stakeholders are very confident that the coaches will take responsibility for their sidelines in such a way that will positively enhance the image of the game.
