Summer Reading

Where is Mr. Garrick reading the summer articles this week?! At the beginning of the school year, you can submit all the locations he has been this summer, and those with the correct answers will be entered into a prize drawing.

All students are required to read these articles by the first day of school.

Well Wishes

Dr. Joe Brettnacher, the Episcopal Moderator and Superintendent for our Diocese, tendered his resignation to relocate to Indianapolis where he will serve as Principal of Scecina Memorial Catholic High School. Dr. Brettnacher has been a staunch supporter of Saint Francis DeSales High School during his tenure with the Diocese of Columbus. The Diocese will be conducting an Open House for Dr. Brettnacher today, Wednesday, August 2 from 1-3 at the Diocesan Education Office (197 East Gay Street, Columbus, Ohio).

Stallions in the Spotlight

Congratulations to Mrs. Jean Garrick for receiving the Ohio Council of Mathematics Secondary Teacher Award for the Central District. She will be recognized at a banquet later this fall.

Mary Polemeni-McGovern (Class of 2021) served as a Student Ambassador for IPERC's 2017 Multicultural Summer Experience. IPERC is an educational exchange organization located in Columbus that promotes cultural exchange and immersion throughout the United States and China. Student ambassadors collaborated with their Chinese counterparts for a week of academic activities, educational travel, and leisure-based excursions. Students visited the Air Force Museum, toured OSU's main campus, hiked in the Hocking Hills, and learned about Chinese and American language and culture. The highlight was a family dinner hosted in the homes of the ambassadors. Mary is pictured here with her new friends Wei "Viviann" Qiang and Jifan "Fiona" Zhang.

On Monday, the Core Team, made up of the sophomores, juniors, and seniors who will be leading future retreats, gathered to go on a retreat themselves. The retreat was led by Ms. Fox, Mr. Welsh, Dani Guanciale '16, Teresa Woods '16, and Rocco Iacabone '17 (not all core team members are pictured). Representatives from Student Council as well as Student Ambassadors have stopped in to SFD this summer to participate in some pre-planning and training too!

Congratulations to sophomore Paige Verfurth who has been selected to receive the Donald Barcza Memorial Scholarship. She will receive $2,500, and will be honored this Sunday at the Bishops' Golf Classic reception.

We welcomed back several alumni at the annual Night of Tradition last Saturday. The senior football players enjoyed meeting some of our alumni from the 1997 State Championship team. A special thanks to Tom Weilbacher '98 who spoke to the crowd that evening.

Thank you!

Thank you to all who participated in the 4th Annual Lennon Loop.  While the weather was a bit soggy it did not detract from a very successful event.  We had 499 registered participants, which is the second highest total since the inception of the event.  The event was a great example of the sense of family that is a foundational piece of this special place.

Daily Reflection

Heavenly Father, in these days of summer, may seeds planted sprout and grow. Where there has been storm or drought, may renewal in hope soon follow. Through these days of summer, please bless the children at play. May they always trust in You, who desire that none go astray. While the days of summer bring longing to be carefree, please comfort all who suffer, whether in soul or mind or body. Thank You for summer days, offering again the chance to see in Your creation a reflection of love's abundance. Amen.
