Strong Support for SNAP Voiced at Salinas Farm Bill Listening Session
Support for SNAP was echoed in Salinas during the second of two U.S. House Agriculture Committee Farm Bill listening sessions that took place in California last week. Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) hosted the August 10th listening session at Hartnell College. Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) and Ranking Member Peterson (MN-7) were also in attendance.
Anti-hunger advocates were well-represented in Salinas and provided powerful testimonies to communicate the benefits of SNAP, the program's reach and impact, and its role as an economic driver. Melissa Kendrick, Executive Director of Food Bank for Monterey County was one of several anti-hunger advocates who urged Representatives Panetta, Costa, and Peterson to support SNAP, reminding them, "We could not do this without you."

State Releases Revised Draft ESSA State Plan
The California Department of Education (CDE) recently released a revised draft of California's Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) State Plan. In a memo
[DOC] to the State Board of Education, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson reasserts that the
Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) should take priority and drive the development of California's State Plan.
As California works to align and fully implement state (LCFF) and federal (ESSA) education policies, CFPA recommends that the state explore opportunities to more fully integrate health and wellness into its accountability system, the California School Dashboard, and needs assessments.
