San Francisco Giants

Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez circled the bases in the second inning for a two-run, inside-the-park home run which gave the Cubs an early 2-0 lead. Baez slid in ahead of Carlos Moncrief's 307-foot throw to catcher Buster Posey, who just missed applying the tag. It was the 10th inside-the-park homer in AT&T Park history and first by a visitor since 2014. Photo by Ed Jay. |

Chicago Cubs left fielder Jon Jay (#30) puts the ball in play, as he would do continually against Giants starter Matt Moore in their game on Monday night, Aug. 7. Jay picked up two hits in five plate appearances and scored twice, to help Chicago hold on for a 5-3 win. Moore was tagged with the loss and his record fell to 3-12. San Francisco Giants Update
|
Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval, at the plate against the Chicago Cubs last Monday evening, continues to retain his Major League swagger. On Sunday afternoon, in an away game against the Washington Nationals, Sandoval crushed his first home run since returning to the Giants, a towering shot that traveled 423 feet and bounced off the facade of the third deck in right field. Sandoval is now batting .218. Photo by Ed Jay. |
San Francisco Giants Update:
AT&T Park had a little extra energy this week, as the Chicago Cubs visited the Bay for the first time since knocking the Giants out of the NLDS last fall. Though the Giants won't return to the postseason this year, the Cubs are in a tight playoff race, giving the Giants a chance to play spoiler for a small dose of revenge. San Francisco took two out of three against the defending World Series champions, winning their third consecutive series at home. During Monday's game, the Giants organization honored Barry Bonds on the 10th
anniversary of his record-breaking 756th
home run. Bonds rejoined the club this season as an advisor to team CEO Larry Baer, and was inducted into AT&T Park's Wall of Fame earlier this season. The Giants then travelled to the nation's capital to face the first-place Washington Nationals. After Friday's game was postponed due to rain, the Giants dropped a pitching duel on Saturday before splitting Sunday's doubleheader. The win came courtesy of Chris Stratton, marking his first career win as a starter. This week the Giants head south to play the Miami Marlins before coming home to face the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Oakland Athletics are excited to be bringing a new ballpark to Oakland and want your opinion. T
hree potential sites are being evaluated: the Coliseum site, Howard Terminal, and Peralta. A location will be announced this year. The new ballpark will be privately financed and the team wishes to create an environment that suits their fans and community, while also allowing for franchise growth and bringing more championships to Oakland. F
eedback is critical in this process. The A's would like your opinions for the ballpark, including seating options, amenities and ballpark design. The survey link provided here gives you a direct opportunity to impact the project from the beginning. Take survey.
|
Oakland Athletics Update:
The Athletics saw a familiar face in the opposing dugout this week when the Seattle Mariners came to the Coliseum. Only two days after Seattle acquired Yonder Alonso from the Athletics, the first baseman found himself sporting away jerseys in Oakland for the first time since 2015. Alonso made his Mariners debut against the A's on Tuesday, going 1-5, as the Athletics dropped a pair to their divisional foe to start the week. The homestand continued for the Athletics against the Baltimore Orioles, with whom they split the four-game series, with help from the long ball. Oakland still holds a winning record at the Coliseum, but dismal play on the road is keeping them in the AL West cellar. In roster moves this week, outfielders Jaycob Brugman and Mark Canha were assigned to Triple-A Nashville, while newly acquired Boog Powell and reliever Michael Brady joined the big league club. This week the Athletics finish their homestand against the Kansas City Royals before hitting the road to face the division-leading Houston Astros.

San Francisco 49ers

Rookie San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster (56), a first round draft pick at No. 31, was impressive in his preseason debut, a 27-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Foster was credited with two tackles and comes with a football pedigree, having been named the Butkus Award winner, given to the nation's best linebacker, at the end of the 2016 college football season. Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders and the NFL have partnered with Pro Football Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz and the Munoz Agency to host an NFL PLAY60 Character Camp as part of the NFL's year-round Hispanic outreach initiative, focusing on offering youth opportunities to play and experience the game of football. On Friday, Aug. 11, along with Oakland Raiders alumni and Raiderettes, approximately 300 predominantly-Hispanic boys and girls met at Laney college in Oakland for a morning and afternoon filled with football drills and friendly camaraderie. 30th annual Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals
|
Charitable events combined to raise more than $78,000 for Northern California non-profit groups during the 30th annual Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway, July 28-30. The proceeds from the majority of events will benefit Sonoma County youth organizations through the Sonoma Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities (SCC), the charitable arm of the raceway, which has distributed more than $5.6 million to qualified youth groups since 2001. Above, left to right, emcee Jack Beckman of Eric Medlen Nitro Night, Dean Antonelli, Austin Prock, Mimi Medlen, Scotty Pollacheck, Ron Capps and Eric Lane. Since its inception, this event has raised more than $268,000. Photo by Mike Finnegan. |

Tight 5 7's Social Tournament
|
The Tight 5 7s Social Tournament is one of the most popular events of the year and was held on Treasure Island on Aug. 5. Nothing serious was at stake; just the fun of the game and a festive atmosphere for all, including the kids. The referees were volunteers. It was great camaraderie, which is a hallmark of rugby throughout the world. The Tournament, now in its sixth year, was organized by Tournament founder, Jacob Nelson. Above, beware of Props carrying the ball. This didn't end well for the bewigged would-be tackler. The team in black was Phat Pha, the Tournament Cup Champions. Photo by Austin Brewin.
|
|
|
Teams at the Tight 5 7's Social Tournament were handicapped. Upon arrival they were weighed in; for men, neutral was 225 pounds, for women, neutral was 185 pounds. Age 40 for both. Over these standards you got points, under cost you. The ideal guy was a 60-year-old, 300-pounder. The worst, a 20-year-old, 150-pound speedster.
There were 14 men's teams and four women's teams. Above,
Brian Schnack, aka Bald White Guy, saw action with both South Valley and the Sea Cocks during the Tournament. Photo by Austin Brewin.

Sports Prep Star -- Sarah Choy
Sacred Heart Prep /
Atherton -- Tennis -- Senior
|
It took nearly three full seasons before someone finally got the best of Sarah Choy in a high school match. Despite losing to Los Gatos' Ashley Yeah in the CCS singles final, Choy is 79-1 in her three-year prep career and considered among the top 10-ranked youth tennis stars in the country and among the Top 5 in the state.
