Aug. 14, 2017
Parades, barbecues, and fireworks are some of the many reasons I enjoy the 4th of July. One more reason is the transformation that takes place in stores across the country from displays of patio furniture and swimming pool toys to school supplies.

Notebooks, markers, pencils, and lunch boxes mark the approach of a new school year and symbolize a fresh start. This is my favorite part of the year. The opportunity to set personal and schoolwide goals and to meet new colleagues, new parents, and, most importantly the new children who will be in our classes. I encourage you to spend time building relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.

As you are selecting new file folders, iPad apps, and posters for your classroom, don't forget to set aside time to invest in your own professional learning. Whether you are a VAPA teacher, a general classroom teacher, a teaching artist, an administrator, or a parent, you can find high-quality professional learning opportunities and resources through the SDCOE VAPA team.

Reach out to design a learning program that fits your needs or to share resources you find helpful. And don't forget to share the great work going on in arts education in your school district and community by tweeting @ArtsEmpowerSD using the hashtag #TheArtsMatter.

As always, I look forward to invitations to visit your classroom or school to see the great learning taking place. I hope you'll share this newsletter with your colleagues, especially any new teachers, so they can join the conversation. Best wishes as you embark on a new school year!

San Diego Arts Network
The San Diego Arts Network is a networking and learning opportunity for all school and district administrators and teacher leaders who work to implement student instruction in any of the visual and performing arts disciplines. The September network meeting will provide information about the Conceptual Framework for the National Core Arts Standards in preparation for the new California VAPA standards. Network members will build their capacity to support arts education at their site/district.

VAPA Teacher Community of Practice
The VAPA Teacher Community of Practice is designed for teachers of all levels of experience with a shared commitment, passion, and desire to improve their teaching practice through regular interaction with one another. Topics include creating standards-based curriculum and assessments, maintaining a work/life balance, and planning successful student productions. Participants will share successes, work through challenges together, and build relationships while creating a shared repertoire of resources to use in the classroom.

Diving Deeper into National Core Arts Standards
It is an historic time for arts education in California as the state revises its VAPA standards and uses the National Core Arts Standards as a foundation.

Diving Deeper into National Core Arts Standards is a crucial step for VAPA teachers, school administrators, and other stakeholders to become familiar with the structure and content of these new standards. Participants can choose to examine the standards globally, by developing a course description in their discipline based on the national standards, or they can choose to explore the instructional impact of the national standards through the development of a series of mini-units. Participants will implement the mini-units in their classrooms and return with evidence of student learning to reflect on the impact of instruction.

New Arts Standards Update
California Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 37 in July adding Media Arts as a fifth arts discipline to be included in the revision of the state's Visual and Performing Arts Standards . The first phase in this process was gathering of input through focus groups and public comment in January. The next phase is to put together an advisory committee to begin the work of revising the standards. According to the California Department of Education, the application period will take place in September and October and the work will begin in February 2018. The advisory committee application notice will be posted in this monthly newsletter and on www.sdcoe.net/VAPA as soon as it becomes available. Also, follow @ArtsEmpowerSD on Twitter for news and updates in arts education.
