A Place to Call Your Own

In the movie "Blind Side" Big Mike was given a room with a futon bed. He remarked it was the first one he ever had. Sandra Bullock, who played the mother taking him in, responded with, "First time you ever had a room of your own?" Big Mike answered, "A bed". It was the first time he had a bed to sleep on. Throughout his life he slept on couches or in different places, but this was the first time he had a bed....and a room.

I just finished a wonderful visit with my 91-year-old Mom, with whom I enjoyed daily stories of her childhood. As we visited, she told me how she never had a room of her own until my Dad passed away! Her parents homesteaded, and she just had a corner of the room. When she stayed with her grandparents, she slept with her grandma. As a teen her bed was over her parent's bed in a travel trailer. Then, when she married, she shared with my Dad. Mom never realized what she didn't have until one of her grandchildren pointed it out. Like Big Mike, Mom made "home" wherever she was.

The Hebrew word mâʻôwn means: "an abode, of God (the Tabernacle or the Temple)... a retreat... dwelling-place, habitation".

The Hebrew letters in this word include the "Mem" representing a fountain or spring of water flowing with wisdom. It also has an "Ayin" that is the eye of revelation. The last letter is the "Nun" which is life, and includes protection. A home should be one in which you feel safe and brings life, revelation, and wisdom.

Psalm 91:1 and 9, 10 tells us, "He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." "Because thou hast made the Lord which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy Habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling."

There is a place where we can "be at home" with God no matter where we are or the circumstance. It's a choice we make. And look at the promise! "No evil will befall us or any plague come near our dwelling!"

Corrie Ten Boom tells of her "home" in the Nazi concentration camp. The beds in her barracks were filled with fleas which at first seemed a terrible thing. But, it was the very fleas which kept her and her sister from being raped by the guards that did not want to come into their barracks! The girls made their "abode" in the secret place of the Most High! Others were like those spoken of in Hebrews 11 that have gone through terrible situations but God kept them and they have been able to help others. They were able to have their habitation with the Lord and He brought them through!

In the times in which we live, we need to find our "home" in Him. Whether we have a bed or a room of our own, we are "home" when we are secure in Him!

Take time daily to enter into His love for you. Turn yourself and your day over to Him letting Him be Lord over all! Choose to trust Him with what concerns you. Meditate on Psalm 91, and memorize the passage! It will help you feel at home and find that place you can call your own in Him!
