Western collectibles that are no longer of value to their current owner are of value to the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation.

The foundation is organizing a Western collectibles auction that will take place Friday, Sept. 15, at the Expo Center in Fort Pierre.

"We're encouraging people to check barns, sheds, basements and attics for items that are no longer of value to them and donate the items to the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation. The foundation will auction the items at the fundraiser that helps support the work of the South Dakota State Historical Society," said foundation President Michael Lewis. The foundation is the nonprofit fundraising partner of the State Historical Society.

Examples of Western collectibles are fine art, antiques, historic firearms, books, Red Wing crocks, spurs, saddles and other items.

The auction will take place at the Expo Center in Fort Pierre the evening of Friday, Sept. 15, as part of the Fort Pierre Bicentennial Celebration. The deadline to donate items is Friday, Aug. 18.

For more information or to donate items, please call foundation Development Director Catherine Forsch at 605-773-6003.

Suicide is a public health cisis.
Farmers and ranchers die by suicide 6 times more often than other adults.
Suicides can be and are stopped everyday.
Above all else, the number one responsibility of Capital Area Counseling Services (CACS) is suicide prevention.

CACS has highly trained and experienced staff ready to help people in the nine counties of Central South Dakoa.

Learn how to recognize the warning signs of suicide; learn what you can do to save a life; an who to call when you or someone you love needs professional help.

Be part of the solution. Call Dennis Pfrimmer of CACS at 605-224-5811 or email dpfrimmer@cacsnet.org to schedule a presentation for your group, class, club or business.
Cardboard Boat Builders for Fireball Run
The Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for 15 businesses, groups or individuals who would like to help students build cardboard boats for the upcoming Fireball Run. Each group will be teamed up with a couple students from the Georgia Morse Middle School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Club to design, build and store the boats. They will be used during the September 29th Fireball Run Amazon TV series.

Each team will need enough cardboard, tape and sealant to build the boats. Construction will begin ASAP in the Georgia Morse Middle School wrestling room. Teams will be assigned a designated "building week" to construct the boats. It's a great way to connect students with the workforce and have a lot of fun along the way.

We will use the same rules as the Oahe Days Cardboard Boat Regatta which can be found above. Each boat should be made strong enough to fit one large adult. Participants from the Cardboard Boat Regatta are encouraged to use it as a trial run before Fireball Run. Have fun with the design, add lots of color and imagination.

Call Laura at the chamber if you would like to be involved or to ask questions - 224-7361
