A new apartment community in Lawrenceville where 700 Civil War-era cannonballs were removed earlier this year is now open to residents.

The City of Pittsburgh and the Arsenal 201 developers, Milhaus Development , announced Friday afternoon that the first tenants of the apartments would move in over the weekend. More than 30 cannonballs dating back to when the property was an arsenal and munitions factory were found by construction workers in late March. McDONALD - A black building? Some considered it a black eye.
"People came to two council meetings in a row and complained," said Patrick Powell, president of McDonald Borough Council and a longtime resident. He was referring to the structure at 134 S. McDonald St., which had been a staple in the downtown business district since 1909, but was undergoing a needed renovation.
The redo of what was once a Napa Auto Parts store included a black facade - a new face that, initially, inspired a bunch of unhappy faces.
"We got a lot of bad feedback from people in town. They said this was a historic place and were afraid we were destroying the place," Melissa Bengtson said with a mild chuckle. The Almono redevelopment has a big new tenant: the Advanced Robotics Manufacturing Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.

When construction was completed on the South Side's Terminal Warehouse and Transfer Company complex in 1906, it was considered the largest, safest and most efficient storage and transfer building on the Eastern seaboard, says Izzy Rudolph, director of development and acquisitions at McKnight Realty Partners.

On Wednesday, South Fayette commissioners voted unanimously to approve a conditional use application for UPMC to build a 90-bed hospital in the Newbury Market complex on Presto Sygan Road.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette , the facility, valued at more than $211 million, is seen by developer Newbury Associates as a needed "second anchor" for the Newbury Market Complex, which has already secured a Top Golf  for the property. The Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County on Thursday are set to consider a request from Continental Real Estate Cos. for easements that the developer says would clear the way for a $22.8 million office building along North Shore Drive. 
Columbus, Ohio-based Continental is planning a seven-story building next to the Fort Duquesne Bridge and wants easements for foundations, overhangs and underground utilities in the SEA-owned North Shore Riverfront Park, according to the authority's board meeting agenda. . .. Read More.
