TICC Agency Spotlight:
Seton

Seton is excited to announce a new Intensive Outpatient  P rogram,  The Restore Program , for the treatment of PTSD. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is the primary treatment modality and is an evidenced based, time limited treatment which focuses on examining thoughts and challenging beliefs about trauma. Other components of the program include Trauma-Sensitive Yoga which helps one regain control of their own body and fight or flight response to triggers, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) which provides tools to cope with and tolerate difficult emotions, and Resilience training and community outings which help renew one's ability to discover positive changes after trauma and feel comfortable in the world again. The Restore Program is held at Seton Behavioral Health at 5407 Clay Avenue in Austin. It is a 6 week program, meets 3 hours a day, four days a week from 9am to noon and is for patients age 18 and above.

If you are interested in referring a patient, going for an intake evaluation, or for more information, please call (512) 324-2039.

Creating a Trauma-Sensitive
Classroom Environment

With the start of a new school year, it is vital that teachers and other educators are aware of both the symptoms of posttraumatic stress as well as ways to create trauma-sensitive classrooms and schools.  Signs of posttraumatic stress in children and adolescents tend to vary based on age, development, and other factors. Some common red flags include:
  • Difficulty forming relationships with adults, including teachers
  • Poor self-regulation
  • Impaired attention and concentration
  • Hypervigilance (startling easily and being overly jumpy)
  • Somatic symptoms (headaches and stomachaches)
One step that educators can take is to create a school and classroom environment that is safe and welcoming for all children. See below for a useful infographic from Echo Parenting on how to create a trauma-informed classroom for students:

Trauma-Informed Care in
AISD

Teri Wood, Ph.D., NBCT, and Mary Beer, LCSW

In 2015, Austin ISD (AISD) introduced Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®) as a model of trauma-informed care to district employees. "TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI® is connection." (Retrieved from https://child.tcu.edu/about-us/tbri/#sthash.F3Gv4YRc.dpbs on August 3, 2017)

In an effort to meet the increasing demand for TBRI® training, trainers from the Child Study Systems, which is housed in the Social and Emotional Learning Department in AISD, seek to provide workshops of various lengths to meet campus needs. To date, 22 campuses and five district support departments have been trained in TBRI®.  In addition, this year TBRI® was part of the required training for every pre-k teacher in the district. The response from the trainings has been overwhelmingly positive.  A survey of participants was conducted after the first year of training, which yielded the following results:
  • 93% agreed that TBRI® helped them gain a better understanding of how trauma affects childhood development
  • 97% think the training would benefit other school professionals and parents
  • 82% agreed they interact with their students differently as a result of the TBRI® training.
  • "When I am feeling frustrated with a child's behavior, it helps me to stop and think about what they are going through, talk to them about the circumstances that have made school difficult at this time, and let them know that there are people here they can go to when they are struggling with their home situation." (Elementary teacher)
  • "While observing a student who was totally emotionally dysregulated, I was able to use some of the connecting principles to help him come back into his body, ground himself and become more regulated before moving to the correcting principles. He was able to reengage much quicker than he would have been before using these principles. (Elementary counselor)

New Asset Mapping Project

St. David's Foundation has provided funds for The Texas Institute for Child and Family Wellbeing (TICFW) to develop an asset map to explore efforts in Travis County for preventing adverse childhood experiences and building resilience both in individuals and in the community.

To guide this process, TICFW has developed a "Foundations to Thrive" framework that explores assets and gaps in universal, secondary and targeted approaches across the following sectors: Health, mental health, education, basic needs, neighborhood climate and the built environment.
