Congressional Medal of Honor Hero to Speak at WACA 2017 National Conference |
November 15-17
Washington, DC
Keynote Speaker:
On November 12, 2015, Captain Florent "Flo" Groberg was given the nation's highest military award, the
Congressional Medal of Honor
- the first immigrant to be so recognized since the Vietnam War.
Captain Groberg was born in the suburbs of Paris. In middle school he and his family moved to the United States, and Flo became a naturalized citizen in 2001. He joined the Army in 2008. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2009, and again in 2012. During his second tour, Flo was guarding a high-level U.S.-Afghan delegation and noticed someone suspicious: a local man stumbling towards his patrol. Flo tackled the man, who was wearing a suicide vest, before he could reach the patrol. Four people died in the explosion, but many were spared. Flo was badly wounded and spent the next three years in recovery.
Captain Groberg's book,
8 Seconds of Courage, tells the story from his childhood in France to his decision to enlist and the grueling training he underwent at U.S. Army Ranger school. It was a powerful sense of responsibility that compelled him to take his brave action to save lives, even at the risk of his own.

Cover to Cover Author Series: August - September

Once the world's bastion of liberal, democratic values, Europe is now having to confront demons it thought it had laid to rest. The old pathologies of anti-Semitism, populist nationalism, and territorial aggression are threatening to teat the postwar European consensus apart. In riveting dispatches from this unfolding tragedy, James Kirchick shows us the shallow disingenuousness of the leaders who pushed for "Brexit;" examines how a vast migrant wave is exacerbating tensions between Europeans and their Muslim minorities; and describes how Russian imperial ambitions are destabilizing nations from Estonia to Ukraine.
