Monthly Evening Program
The Value of Energy Analysis, from Design Day One
|

Tuesday, August 8
This interactive program will provide attendees with a charrette experience for evaluating and driving building energy performance-to analyze results in real time, as early as pre-design. During this session, volunteer participants act as design team members from all disciplines, working with real building characteristics and an actual building design. Using an analysis approach that assists with a cost benefit discussion, the participants will assemble "bundles" of selected energy efficiency measures to play out what-if scenarios, discussing the merits and challenges of each bundle. This program, with live tools and facilitation, will demonstrate an effective method for guiding energy decision-making during early design, towards achieving higher efficiency goals and increasingly stringent energy codes.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Recognize the value early energy analysis provides to the design process and client decision-making
- Identify a range of energy-efficiency options and their impacts on energy outcomes during various stages of design
- Interpret building performance and financial information provided by energy analysis results, including lifecycle costs
- Examine how decisions made very early in pre-design can increase energy savings opportunities

The USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter is looking for individuals to mentor with the Green Schools Quest! The mentor registration deadline is August 15, 2017.
Since the Green Schools Quest launched four years ago, over 100 schools have participated - many for multiple years. Student-driven projects at these schools have impacted nearly 100,000 students, teachers, and community members.
Participating schools and mentors can't say enough about the positive impact this program is having in advancing their schools' sustainability initiatives.
As we gear up for the 2017-18 school year, we are seeking Green Mentors to work with local schools.
Mentors should be willing and able to provide sustainability expertise and guidance to their students, and should commit to a minimum of 4-6 hours per month of personal time mentoring within assigned school beginning October 2017 and concluding mid-March 2018.
Other mentor responsibilities include:
- Meet with the school Green Team at least twice per month.
- Help students and their team Sponsor (a minimum of one faculty/staff/parent per team will assist as team Sponsor) green their schools for little or no cost.
- Provide guidance on project selection, execution, establishment of metrics and recording impact.
- Assist with documentation and preparation of final submission (such as video or PowerPoint).
- Help assigned school compete for special recognition in the Green Schools Quest.
- Attend one Green Mentor training prior to visiting your assigned school.

USGBC-MGC strives to offer a diverse selection of educational programs to educate our members and community on current green building principles and practices and to expand the opportunities for LEED Professionals to gain continuing education hours.
We are particularly seeking in-depth workshops - extended consideration of topics to build upon green building professionals' existing knowledge.

LEED Green Associate Exam Prep Course - Summer 2017

Distinguish yourself with a LEED Green Associate credential!
Passing the Green Associate exam will allow you to market your knowledge of the preeminent standards in the green building industry, and it is the first step in becoming a LEED Professional.
The LEED Green Associate credential is designed for professionals who want to demonstrate green building expertise in non-technical fields of practice. This credential attests to basic knowledge of green design, construction, and operations.
USGBC-Missouri Gateway's LEED Green Associate Exam Prep course is designed to prepare participants for the LEED Green Associate exam.
Participants will receive access to an online exam simulator to assist with continued exam preparation at the conclusion of the course.

 The USGBC-MGC Emerging Professionals kicked off the 4th of July holiday weekend at Busch Stadium. They volunteered with 4 A Greener Game, collecting recyclables from fans as the Cardinals brought home an 8 to 1 win against the Washington Nationals!

2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Operation Clean Stream! Since 1967, The Open Space Council for the St. Louis Region has organized Operation Clean Stream, one of the country's largest and longest running river restoration projects. The fourth weekend of every August, event volunteers take to the Meramec River and its tributaries, working to undo damage caused throughout the year by flooding, careless littering and the unlawful dumping of trash.

| Three Missouri Schools Honored at 2017 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Ceremony |

On Wednesday, July 19, three Missouri Green Ribbon Schools were honored by the U.S. Department of Education in a private ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Forty-five schools, nine districts, and nine colleges and universities were recognized for their commitment to reducing environmental impact and utility costs, promoting better health, and providing environmental education.
Hope Gribble, USGBC-MGC Education and Green Schools Manager, accompanied the Maplewood-Richmond Heights Middle School team and represented USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter at the ceremony.

McKelvey Elementary School, Maryland Heights, MO
McKelvey Elementary has an active Green Team of staff and students. The club meets weekly to lead recycling efforts, encourage green living, and identify and research problems and implement and measure solutions. For example, its work includes recycling, composting, clean air, energy conservation, wind power, solar power, and solar panels. This student-led initiative has created many low-cost and easy to implement changes that result in resource conservation and utility costs savings and healthier learning environments.

Parkway North High School, St. Louis, MO
Parkway North is a school that has a deep-rooted commitment to whole school sustainability. The school has worked to make its physical place, organizational culture, and educational program more sustainable. For many years, the school has been on the forefront of integrating environmentally preferable procedures into the everyday operating practices of the building. In most cases, these enhancements have been a direct response to student-driven initiatives, ranging from single-stream recycling programs, community clothing drop-off boxes, a shoe drive water project, composting for food scrap and compostable serviceware, river cleanup crews, rain gardens, and native prairie gardens.

Maplewood Richmond Heights Middle School, Maplewood, MO
 Maplewood Richmond Heights Middle School (MRHMS) is located in the city of Maplewood, which received the National Green City Award as the result of a large and concentrated effort from Maplewood Richmond Heights Middle School and its district. It also is the very first Green Dining District in Saint Louis. MRHMS has worked hard, with support from the communities of Maplewood and Richmond Heights, to develop a green school that upholds the district cornerstones of scholarship, stewardship, leadership, and citizenship. Maplewood Richmond Heights has led the way in developing innovative programming and learning surrounding the unique sustainability needs in an urban area. MRHMS has very limited green space, but still has provided a rich curriculum that integrates gardens, aquaponics, urban chickens, beehives, composting, and a rain garden. Alexandra L. Campbell-Ferrari
Alexandra Campbell-Ferrari is the Executive Director of the Center for Water Security and Cooperation (CWSC) in Washington, D.C. Ms. Campbell-Ferrari was a 2014-2015 Fulbright Scholar in Spain researching European and Spanish water law and watershed management. After receiving her Juris Doctor (JD) Degree in Environmental Law from George Washington University, Ms. Campbell-Ferrari practiced with Sullivan & Worcester LLP in its Environmental, Energy, and Natural Resources practice, where she co-authored an amicus curiae
brief to the Supreme Court of the United States on stormwater issues. She has also worked with the Office of the Connecticut Attorney General; the Environmental Protection Agency; the Natural Resources Defense Council; the Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, Environmental Crimes Section; and the Department of Energy. Ms. Campbell-Ferrari's current scholarship focuses on U.S. and European water law, including interstate water compacts and river basin management. She currently teaches at American University Washington College of Law, George Washington University Law School, and University of Maryland Francis King Carey School.
