There is a fairly new pest in town, called Crapemyrtle Bark Scale.  It is becoming more of an issue each and every year.  This pest visibly starts out as a white scale (as shown in the picture above), then transforms into a black, sooty mold all over the plant.  To learn more about it and how to control it, click  HERE .

Did you know that, of the almost one million species of insects roaming the earth today, there are comparatively very few troublemakers, and they seem to multiply overnight.  But . . . to the rescue . . .  there are also insect good guys, too.  To learn who they are and how to tell the difference between the good insects and the bad insects in your garden,  click  HERE .

Nothing wrecks a good day outside than being attacked by an infestation of ticks, mosquitoes, and/or chiggers.   Despite the many ways these pests can breach our personal spaces, there are just as many ways that we can protect ourselves.  Some methods require the use of chemicals that can be applied in a broad space and others are applied topically and don't require the use of harsh chemicals.  Chick  HERE to read further about how to protect yourself against these pesky pests.

      

In general, perennials should be divided every few years opposite of their flowering season.  Divide spring-flowering perennials in the fall.  Divide fall-flowering perennials in the spring.  How to tell when your plants need to be divided and for other information on this subject,  READ ON.

     

Armyworms are not actually worms.  They are the larvae, or caterpillar, of a moth and they love to eat grassy plants (e.g. lawns).  Large numbers can consume all above-ground plant parts, and they are capable of killing or severely retarding the growth of grasses.  And, F all armyworms don't necessarily wait until the fall to do their damage. For those of us who love the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables, gardening is a  year-round activity.  The fall gardening season (which begins in late July to early August) can actually produce some of the tastiest garden vegetables in Northeast Oklahoma, as we typically have warm, sunny days followed by cool nights later in the season. Under these very favorable growing conditions, plant metabolism slows down which helps them produce high quality and tasty vegetables.   Click  HERE  to read more about Fall Gardening.

The Tulsa Master Gardener Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization.  As such, it receives no city, state or federal funding for its Tulsa community outreach programs. In fact, the majority of Tulsa's Master Gardener programs are self-funded by its members. We need your help..

Tulsa Master Gardener's own fundraisers make up most of the income to cover expenses. More specifically, a significant portion comes from the Tulsa Master Gardener Annual Spring Plant Sale that is held each April. Other fundraisers include the Garden Tour (June) and "Garage Sales" that occur from time to time. Finally, one of the most important income sources that sometimes gets overlooked are the personal and corporate donations.  These are so important in helping to meet our financial obligations and we want you to know they are very much appreciated.
