Enjoying the Fitness Floor

As with all changes in seasons, summer time at Liberty looks and feels a bit different from other times of the year.  In addition to the fun and excitement of our outdoor facilities, the fitness floor sees some new traffic throughout the summer months.  Just like our outdoor facilities, we want to make sure our fitness floor space is a safe and enjoyable place for all our members.  We'd like to take this opportunity to kindly highlight some of the fitness floor policies and guidelines designed for everyone's safety and enjoyment:
  • Please refrain from talking on your cellphone.  The lobby and seating area are a great place to take a phone call.
  • Please wear appropriate footwear.  Sandals and open-toed shoes aren't permitted on the fitness floor, track or basketball court.
  • Kids need to be 12 years old to use the cardio equipment and weight machines, but need to be 15 years old to use free weights.
  • Please replace your weights and small equipment. It can be frustrating to other members when a piece of equipment isn't located in its normal spot. It is equally as frustrating when they must remove several weights in order to use a piece of equipment.
  • Please allow others to "work-in."  We all need some rest between sets, feel free to ask our trainers or other members if you can "work-in" a set before they conduct their next set.
  • Please wipe down equipment after use.
We greatly appreciate your efforts in helping us maintain a clean, fun and safe exercise environment at Liberty.
Have a great summer!

Organic Foods
from the Desk of Susan Cutshaw M.S., Nutritionist

We live in an age when organic foods are available everywhere from farm markets to super market chains.  The USDA has established criteria to define "organic" that cover products from the farm to your table.  These include soil and water quality, pest and livestock management, and food additives.

The costs however can make purchasing organics often prohibitive when compared with their conventionally grown counterparts. Is there a health advantage to consuming organic foods that overrides the steeper price?

Health claims
The latest research suggests there's not a significant nutritional advantage from eating organic foods.  In a recent study comparing organic and conventional foods, researchers at Stanford University found no significant difference in nutritional value between the two.

The advantage to organics may be in the use of pesticides.  Several studies indicate that organically grown foods have less pesticide residue than conventionally grown foods.  Each year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) compiles a list of foods containing high levels of pesticides in order from most to least - "The Dirty Dozen".  The same group also has a list of foods with the lowest pesticide levels - "The Clean 15".

The Dirty Dozen 2017 The Clean 15 2017
1. Strawberries 1. Sweet corn
2. Spinach 2. Avocados
3. Nectarines 3. Pineapple
4. Apples 4. Cabbage
5. Peaches 5. Onions
6. Pears 6. Sweet peas (frozen)
7. Cherries 7. Papayas
8. Grapes 8. Asparagus
9. Celery 9. Mangos
10. Tomatoes 10. Eggplant
11. Sweet bell peppers 11. Honeydew melon
12. Potatoes 12. Kiwi

13. Cantaloupe

14. Cauliflower

15. Grapefruit

Bottom line
This doesn't mean we should purchase only organic produce when making selections from the dirty dozen lists.  In fact researchers and nutritionists are very clear that the bottom line should be eating more veggies and fruit whether they are organic or conventionally grown.

General Reminders

Dog Safety dog in car

Please do not leave your animals in a parked car.  This raises many questions and concerns among our membership when we are not able to locate the owner in the club.  As a result, the police may be called.  We certainly want both you and your pets to be healthy and safe.  Automobile temperatures can very quickly rise to dangerous levels; the average temperature increase in a parked car is 40 degrees, and the majority of this increase occurs in the first 15 to 30 minutes. When it's 80 degrees outside, your car will be a staggering 114 degrees, after 30 minutes! Worse still, dogs can't cool themselves down as easily as people, and once they overheat, they can suffer extensive organ damage or die.  We appreciate your attention to this matter.

Outdoor Water Park

Member Check-in is required at the outdoor waterpark.  If you do not have your liberty key card, please present a drivers license to the outdoor desk attendant.

Unless enrolled in a Liberty sponsored program or event, children must be 12 years old to be dropped off at the club without a parent or adult supervisor.  Supervisors must be 16 years or older.

Tree House

Please remember to bring socks for your children when coming to the Tree House.

Indoor Waterpark

The indoor Liberty Lagoon is not scheduled to be lifeguarded during the summer season. Should the outdoor waterpark close due to inclement weather or other circumstances, the lifeguard staff from outside will move indoors.

During Un-lifeguarded Indoor Waterpark Hours: children under age 15 must be accompanied by a parent in the pool area.

Lagoon Activity Center and Climbing Wall

Children under age 8 must be accompanied by a parent in the Lagoon's activity center.  Ages 8 and up may use this area  unaccompanied, as long as parents remain on Liberty's premises.  The climbing wall is for use by patrons weighing a minimum of 45 lbs. and a maximum weight of 250 lbs., during designated hours.

Obstacle Play Park Rules
Children must be 5 years of age or older to play on the Obstacle Play Park structure. Socks must be worn when playing within the structure.
