"A Howling Good Time"
October 4-11, 2017

The full moon is rising and so are our sails.  The event once dubbed "A Howling Good Time" by Cruising World is back!  Founded in 1987, the annual Harvest Moon Regatta event has grown from just under 20 boats to over 200! The 150 nautical-mile race begins at the Flagship Hotel Pier in Galveston and follows the Texas coast to Port Aransas over the course of 2 days and 2 nights, when the night sky is dominated by the beautiful harvest moon. In addition to an adventure down the coast, sailors will enjoy a barbeque banquet in Port Aransas, Race Finish Party, and the Rum Mary Party.  It's the perfect opportunity to gain offshore sailing experience or add to your sailing certifications.

Everyone is invited to participate as a crew member; however we are also offering  ASA 103/104 Combo (Basic Coastal Cruising & Bareboat Chartering), ASA 105 (Coastal Navigation), and ASA 106 (Advanced Coastal Cruising) during this event.

Article from Capt. Lori
By Capt. Lori Hefley

Ahoy all!!! My name is Captain Lori Hefley. I grew up in this area and on the bay since 1976. I remember watching sailboats pass through the drawbridge thinking I wanted to be out there instead of in this car. I would say that was my first interest in sailing as a 'lil' tot.

Captain Lucy hired me originally in 2011. (Since then we have been helping each other on and off through the past years.) Before my adventures at South Coast Sailing began, I didn't know much about sailing other than being a passenger. I didn't know a sheet from a sail! I always loved being on the water since my family and I have a power boat, but there is something different about sailing that I fell in love with. So I went through several courses and enjoyed learning and gaining more experience.

As I was sitting in the office one day, calling the Captains to go out on the water, and get paid, my inner thought was, "I want on this captains list. I want to get paid to be on the water and share my newly found passion for sailing."

So I took the captains course and passed in late April of 2016.  I collected my boat time and I was now a Captain. Next thing I know Captain Lucy was telling me she was offering the Instructors Qualification Clinic known as the IQC in September 2016. I took the ASA 201 to become an instructor for the ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Coarse. After auditing some classes, I am proud to say that I AM ON THE CAPTAINS LIST and it is everything I hoped it would be! It is really exciting as I watch the students from the first hour of class to the last hour of class and the AH-HA moments in between. I love to see that spark of enthusiasm for sailing and their respect for the water and wind grow. It is something so amazing! It is especially exciting when the dolphins swim by to say hi! So many people have no idea they are in our very own Galveston Bay.

In addition to all of the above, I am now looking to purchase my first sailboat and wanting to travel. I am loving my new lifestyle and really looking forward to continue to grow my sailing career.

Thank you Captain Lucy and South Coast Sailing Adventures for turning this "landlubber" into a sailor, and helping me follow my dreams!

Now how can we help you in your sailing career? Come on in and let's get started!
