NEW PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Medical Interpretation: Spanish Certificate Program
If you are fluent in English and Spanish, you may want to consider a rewarding career as a Spanish medical interpreter. Demand for the job is growing because of the increasingly diverse population and more focus on quality hospital care and safety.

Beginning in Fall 2017, UNLV Continuing Education is offering the Medical Interpretation: Spanish Certificate Program to prepare students to become certified medical interpreters. Students must be fluent in both English and Spanish, be at least 18 years old, and have a high school diploma or GED. Classes focus on understanding the complexities of interpretation, roles and responsibilities of a medical interpreter, use of relevant medical terminology and its context, and the development of interpretation skills.

For more information, call 702-895-3394 or email  continuing.education@unlv.edu .

The Division of Educational Outreach recognizes Elena Gandia Garcia, Ph.D. for teaching excellence. Garcia is the recipient of the 2017 Division of Educational Outreach Faculty Excellence Award for being at the forefront of addressing a need for the state of Nevada and providing students with the skills to be successful legal interpreters. Garcia was instrumental to the development and implementation of the Legal Interpretation: Spanish Certificate Program for UNLV Continuing Education.

Scholarships Awarded for Re-Entry Students to Finish Their Degrees
UNLV Grad
Non-traditional students make up more than 20 percent of all students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Not surprisingly, money is often a barrier for adult learners returning to higher education to complete their degree. It is now less of a barrier for 20 UNLV students.

The Community2Campus office within the Division of Educational Outreach administers several scholarships earmarked especially for students returning to college after an extended interruption. Working in concert with the Adult Learner Advisory Board, 20 students have been offered scholarships totaling $69,111.18. Individual scholarships range from between $500 to $2500 annually.
Cannon Survey Center Earns High Praise for its Surveys

Cannon Survey Center (CSC) is wrapping up the 18th consecutive (and final) month of customer feedback surveys on behalf of the Nevada State Contractors Board. These data are being used to shape improvements in the Board's licensing and complaint resolution processes.  CSC staff have received high praise from the Board for their dedication and hard work in achieving great response rates.

If you are interested, CSC will work with you through all phases of your survey project, from project planning, to survey setup, to data collection and reporting. Please contact our Project Coordinator, Bridget Kelly, at bridget.kelly@unlv.edu or 702-895-5731 to discuss your project needs.
