Update from the Executive Director
There is something so satisfying
about being part of a new initiative!
Last evening, 24 MCC members gathered to brainstorm ideas about how best to nurture their collective and individual
participatory
art interests. Affinity groups within Music/Dance, Writing, Theater an Visual Arts were formed. They came armed and ready with some terrific ideas, many excellent questions and a commitment to being proactive in their quest to Support Their Art Habit!
If you were not able to attend,
Friday's End of Week Update will include a link to the summaries from each art group, and an overview of ways in which each group could explore, connect with and reach out to include the larger MCC membership in this exciting new initiative. A contact person will be listed for each group if you are interested in joining their on-going conversation. Watch for it!
It's Last Tuesday Happy Hour day!!
Carve out some time late this afternoon for an opportunity to connect with your MCC friends. Bring a guest -- a great way for them to get to know some of our members.
Happy Hour info listed below this post.
MILL CITY COMMONS: We learn. We share. We engage. We give.

Historic Milwaukee Avenue Walking Tour
Wednesday, July 26, 1:30 - 3:00 pm
Milwaukee Avenue Historic District, Milwaukee & Franklin Avenues
The Milwaukee Avenue Historic District in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis is a half-hidden two-block-long landscaped walking lane with small workers' cottages, whose gingerbread porches in front of brick gabled facades are set right up to the walkway. Its historic designation recognizes this place for its immigrant history as the first homes in America in the late 19th century for Scandinavian and northern European factory worker households, and for its unique architecture and sense of place. The area was slated for demolition in a 1970s neighborhood-wide urban renewal program, but a neighborhood organization thwarted that plan. Their rehabilitation-oriented renewal program preserved their neighborhood's older character. Architect, activist and author Bob Roscoe will lead the tour. Meet at the corner of Milwaukee and Franklin Avenues. (Milwaukee Avenue is between 22nd and 23rd Avenues, east of Hiawatha.) OPTIONAL: Meet for lunch at noon on the patio of the Seward Café, 2129 E. Franklin Ave.

Americanah
by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria and reignite their passion-for each other and for their homeland.
If you'd like to read ahead, September's book is The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email Barbara Goldner.

Spotlight on the Ash Can School of Art
Wednesday, August 9, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
ArtAndes Studio, 1500 Jackson St NE, #285
Join us to learn more about the Ash Can School, a small group of artists who sought to document everyday life in turn-of-the-century New York City, capturing it in realistic and unglamorized paintings and etchings of urban street scenes. Local author Robert Gambone highlights Jerome Myers, whose pioneering work places him in the forefront of contemporary realist artists. Myers' focused concentration depicting the environment and inhabitants of New York City's Lower East Side immigrant community allows us to understand these immigrant neighborhoods in a way that would not be possible today if his art did not exist. Speaker Robert Gambone is the author of Jerome Myers: The Ash Can Artist of the Lower East Side.

Join us for a discussion about refugee resettlement in Minnesota, where we'll answer questions such as: Who is a "refugee"? What's the refugee journey to Minnesota like? What's the transformative impact of refugee communities in Minnesota? What's the future of refugee resettlement with President Trump's travel ban? How can I get involved? Speaker Molly Hayes was most recently Program Director at the International Institute of Minnesota, where she oversaw workforce development and education programs for New Americans (refugees and immigrants) across the Twin Cities. Previously, Hayes was a U.S. State Department foreign policy advisor focused on the Middle East and Africa.
