San Francisco Chronicle: One Day, One Place: A beachless stay in St. Petersburg
Historically known mostly as a beach-and-retiree town - more hip-replacement than hip - St. Petersburg has been evolving into a magnet for buzzy new dining and nightlife, driven mostly by an exploding arts scene. The city's most famous art institutions, the DalĂ Museum and the Chihuly Collection, have moved to impressive new digs, and an up-and-coming community of artists has helped spark St. Pete's arts revival. Its foodie scene has skyrocketed, too, with a flurry of chef-driven restaurants and dozens of breweries.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: Tampa Bay business leaders share summer reading picks, for fun and focus
A dozen Tampa Bay business leaders give a glimpse into their choices for serious and beach reading.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman isn't letting an election get in the way of his summer reading. For escapism purposes, he is reading "Deep Blue" by Randy Wayne White. The murder mystery novel was a gift from the author. The mayor is also reading "Behind Enemy Lines: The True Story" of a French Jewish spy in Nazi Germany by Marthe Cohn and Wendy Holden.

The Ringer: The Unlikely Rise of... Shuffleboard?

Tom Petty and REO Speedwagon boomed off the grandstand seats. Players were illuminated by twinkling white Christmas lights hanging from the rafters above the open-air setup. The hubbub was punctuated by the rhythmic smacking of heavy plastic discs against each other and the intermittent eruption of cheers. I stood, stunned into silence, marveling at this unfettered display of youthful vigor. When did shuffleboard, that bastion of geriatric time-killing, become cool?

Tampa Bay Business Journal: St. Pete is on deck for more than 150 high paying jobs if they nab this government agency

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) may be moving its Miami-based fisheries headquarters to St. Petersburg.

St. Pete City Development Manager  Alan DeLisle  has been working since 2015 on bringing the NOAA lab to the city's Innovation District immediately south of downtown.  The district  encompasses about three square miles and fosters collaboration between top institutions in order to attract talent with high-wage jobs while advancing research that could lead to breakthroughs in various STEM industries.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: Mystery company wants to add 60 high-wage jobs in St. Pete

Members of   St. Petersburg City Council  will discuss next week whether or not to recommend a $36,000 tax break to an unnamed company in order to create 60 high-wage jobs.

The agenda for July 13 lists a Qualified Target Industry (QTI) proposal for a "confidential project" that would provide an average salary of nearly $70,000 for at least 60 people with an estimated economic impact of nearly $6 million.

The Weekly Challenger: City Hall gives hope for the drug epidemic

During the recent rededication of Jordan Park, I had the opportunity to ask Mayor Kriseman what he was doing about the drug and alcohol problem in St. Petersburg. I informed him that what was happening presently in St. Pete is the same thing that happened in Baltimore in the 60s and 70s that led to Baltimore becoming one of the cities in America with the highest opioid addiction and homicide rate.

Two weeks later, Deputy Mayor Dr. Kanika Tomalin called me stating that the mayor wanted me to put together a Drug Task Force for the city. This is a God-sent blessing that will positively affect every aspect of our community and give hope to many who suffer from the disease of addiction, especially seniors.
