Welcome from the National Executive Director
ACHPER will create the opportunity to gather with the ACHPER Board, State Presidents, the National Executive Director and the Branch Executive Officers in Brisbane on Saturday August 19 and Sunday August 20. The National Representative Forum provides a forum for ACHPER to listen to, engage in discussion and strategise for you, our members with the aim of supporting you in your professional work.  The Annual General Meeting will also be held and will include the election of new members to the ACHPER Board.  On behalf of ACHPER, I would like to thank all members of the current Board for their ongoing contributions to the profession and ACHPER.  An announcement of the new Board will be provided in our September Advocate eNews.

I would like to draw your attention to the Australian Sport Commission's Teaching Sport to Children discussion paper released earlier this month. The ACHPER Board, through the Academic Advisory Group will be offering specific feedback to this discussion paper. Insights offered within the content of the document are of particular interest to ACHPER's members and our purpose and include ASC insights on: holistic child development; physical literacy; and teacher professional development.

NATIONAL HPE DAY: Register Your School
The National HPE Day website contains some great ideas and activities that your school can undertake on Wednesday September 6 to demonstrate how much it values this important learning area in the curriculum.

ACHPER encourages schools, children, teachers and communities to take photos and videos of active participation in physical activity and upload them onto social media using the #HPEday hashtag. Some great prizes to be won, including two  AFL 9s kits (one primary and one secondary) valued at over $500 each! ACHPER would like to thank  AFL Schools  for their support of National HPE Day.

MOVI Workspace
Over the past few years many health professionals and health institutes have compared sitting for 12 hours a day to smoking. Sedentary behaviour is causing a health epidemic - and we must start talking about it.

Minimising daily sitting time and regularly moving and exercising combats this modern day health epidemic. But almost every professional in the world today sits in front of a computer for the majority of their working day.   MOVI Workspace is here to change that.

To learn more, download our book, "The Sitting Epidemic", full of facts and insights into this modern-day health issue. Available at www.sittingepidemic.com.

BLOG: Analysing Australia's Senior Secondary Physical Education
In Australia, senior secondary physical education (SSPE) curriculum is often an under-explored part of the overall Health and Physical Education (HPE) landscape. Brown and Penney (2013) describe SSPE syllabus as vital, because unpacking the key determinants in SSPE performance impacts future prospects such as employment, higher education and training.

In this Blog, Brendon Hyndman from Southern Cross University analyses the key concepts and themes from senior secondary PE syllabi across Australian states and territories.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Active + Healthy Journal
Long-time readers of the Active + Healthy Magazine will be excited to learn that ACHPER will be launching this publication as a Journal in the coming weeks. The Editorial Board of the new publication, Active + Healthy Journal have made this decision for the following reasons:
  1. it allows researchers and academics to potentially gain greater recognition for their work when published; and
  2. it also enables our readers to engage with research and contemporary thinking through a potentially greater number of authors.
ACHPER welcomes the submission of articles for peer review, along with our regular process and trust that this component of our publication will add to its value for the profession and for you as a reader.

The first edition of the Active + Healthy Journal will be a Special Edition on Sport Education, which will be released to members shortly.

ACHPER is seeking professionals interested in serving on our volunteer Editorial Review Board for the Active + Healthy Journal for the remainder of 2017 and in 2018.  If you are interested or know a colleague who may be interest, please contact us at [email protected].
