Bee-Friendly Landscaping: Why It Matters
Essential to Michigan Agriculture

Michigan field crops bring in over $5 billion to the state annually (Wolcott, 2016). Our state relies heavily on fruit crops, including blueberries, cherries, and apples. These crops require pollination to thrive. A threat to bees means a threat to Michigan crops and food supplies all over the country. A 2015 study lead by David Kleijn found that just two percent of wild bee species contributes 80 percent of crop pollination visits globally. This means that if bee populations continue to decline, then our agriculture system could suffer greatly.

Why Are Bees at Risk?

As more and more habitats are getting destroyed in Michigan, so are the bee colonies who rely on them. Without proper protection and food supplies, millions of bees are struggling to survive. They are dying out at increased rates that have agriculturists, scientists, and even our government concerned. The decrease in bee populations has a domino-effect on crops, habitats, plant diversity, animal, and even humans.

What You Can Do To Help

  • Plant more. According to the experts who wrote "How to Create a Bee-Friendly Landscape," it is all about the habitat. Bees need places to thrive and pollinate. Maples, willows, honeysuckle, rose bushes, mint, oregano, asters, marigolds, and coneflowers attract healthy bee populations and encourage health habitat development.
  • Add water to your landscaping. Install a bird bath, pond, or natural watering hole where both birds and bees can drink from.
  • Plant seasonal varieties. Consider flowers, shrubs, and trees that bloom at varying times throughout the year. Not only will you have fresh landscaping all year long, you will be giving bees a place to call home.
