Book Club Mailing
New to GrapeVine as another way to get health information out in your community is Book Club. We will be introducing this new concept for the brain health unit on Tuesday afternoon of the conference, using former Governor Marty Schreiber's book "My Two Elaines". If you haven't already done so, please register for the conference as soon as possible so we can mail the book to you. We are hoping you will have time to read it and in turn be able to actively participate in the training. Governor Schreiber will be in attendance to speak and do a book signing that day as well.

Material Distribution Change
This year, we will not be bringing unit materials for you to pick up at the conference unless you have a session already planned. If you have any sessions coming up and haven't notified us yet, please fill out the online scheduling form, so we can have the appropriate materials ready for you at the conference.
  • Post-session surveys are to be handed out by you and completed by the participant AFTER sessions. Please collect a completed survey from each participant in exchange for the incentive.
  • Please be sure to send your paperwork (sign-in sheet, surveys, and session report) to WWHF within 2 weeks of your session.
  • Would you like to be featured in the next newsletter? Send your session stories and pictures to Nora at [email protected]. We'd love to share what you've been up to!
UPDATES
GrapeVine Helps with Million HeartsĀ® Initiative

Throughout June, GrapeVine has been partnering with the Wisconsin Community Health Fund and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to share heart health information across the state. The goal is to increase cardiovascular disease prevention by reaching both rural and urban sites with our "Heart Health: Know Your Numbers" unit.

By the end of the summer, Sue Richards and other GrapeVine staff will have visited seven different counties, including Adams, Green, Iowa, LaFayette, Milwaukee, Outagamie, and St. Croix, and shared valuable heart health information with local residents. Below are comments from session participants and what they have learned:

"Your health begins with your efforts.
Some health concerns are preventable."

"Small lifestyle changes make a big difference."

"Prevention IS taking care of yourself."

Heat Awareness
June 8th was Wisconsin's Heat Awareness Day, but any day can be an opportunity to remind others of the dangers associated with extreme heat. Use these resources by Ready Wisconsin to educate your community on the symptoms of heat-related illness and what to do to stay safe.
Sun, Cancer, and Vitamin D
We know that exposure to ultraviolet rays is a cause of skin cancer, the most common cancer in the US. Help your community members lower their risk of skin cancer by being prepared and taking precautions when outside. Here the American Institute for Cancer Research busts some of the most common myths about sun exposure and protection - great information for a bulletin board!
Cancer Disparities in Rural Areas
Despite decreases in cancer death rates nationwide, a new  report  released by the CDC shows slower reduction in cancer death rates in rural America compared with urban America. As GrapeVine partners, you play a vital role in helping reduce the gap. Among other proven strategies,  CDC researchers encourage healthcare providers to promote healthy behaviors that reduce cancer risk and focus on cancer prevention in rural areas.

GRAPEVINE PARTNER FEATURE:  Jennifer Hildebrand
Jennifer Hildebrand got involved with GrapeVine two years ago after learning about it at a conference for Faith Community Nurses in Memphis, TN. She was drawn to it, saying "The concept about bringing health education to the community is just what my ministry is all about!"

Though she lives and works for a health system in Iowa, she has no trouble finding audiences in Wisconsin and is a great example for other GrapeVine partners to take advantage of already gathered groups. "Our daughters, both nurses, live in Wisconsin. They both are young mothers and have plenty of "mom" friends who are willing to come and listen to a presentation at a Mom's Day Out or Bible Study." Family events are another great option! "Instead of some silly wedding and baby shower games (which everyone hates) I presented some of the GrapeVine Unit Trainings. The response was overwhelming and everyone loves the freebies!"

Jennifer recommends targeting family or friends for GrapeVine sessions, especially if you're not comfortable speaking in front of a crowd. And she leaves other partners with this message: "Remember, you don't need to present to a huge crowd ...'where 2 or 3 are gathered in my name, there am I'."
