Is there a business
in our area  that deserves recognition?

Every year the Spruce Grove & District Chamber of Commerce hosts an Awards Gala to celebrate business excellence in our community.

Do you know a business in Spruce Grove or the surrounding area that you believe delivers outstanding customer service, provides a product or service the community requires, and actively participates in the support of community events.

We are asking citizens in our community to name a business/organization that they feel deserves to be recognized for the People's Choice Award. Please take the following survey to help us choose a winner.

Finalists will be announced on our website, followed by a ceremony to celebrate the winners at the Awards Gala in Fall 2017.

NEWS WE ARE FOLLOWING

Big increases to minimum wage are becoming fashionable in Canada: first Alberta (from $12.20 currently to $15 in October 2018), then B.C. (from $10.35 to $11.35 in September 2017) and now Ontario (from $11.40 to $15.00 in January 2019, a 30% hike in 18 months). Are workers better off or does it mean fewer jobs? The debate has been ferocious because economists don't agree, but let's look at the fundamentals.

Interest rate hike: Why Stephen Poloz still sounds anxious     Joe Castaldo July 12, 2017
Household debt, weak investment and uncertainty about inflation makes everything about the economy feel temporary. Including Wednesday's rate bump.

The Bank of Canada's decision to raise its key interest rate to 0.75 per cent today was entirely expected. The bigger question was what's next: is the central bank's intention to simply reverse the two rate cuts made in 2015 that dealt with the oil price crash? Or is today the start of a path toward higher interest rates?

Despite the bank's upbeat tone, Governor Stephen Poloz was reluctant to commit to either scenario. "I'm hesitating to classify it as either one of those stories," he said at a press conference this morning. "There's no predetermined path at this stage. It's a data dependent, quarter-by-quarter analysis that we'll be doing."...continue reading

Don't count the oilsands out, says industry pioneer Rick George
The man who helped turn the oilsands into an economic force believes the industry will outlast those who are in power today by centuries

It would be easy to write off the oilsands - as many government and investor types are doing - if it weren't for relentless optimists such as Rick George.

The former chief executive of Suncor Energy Inc., who more than anyone transformed the Alberta oil deposits into an economic force, believes they are due for a rebound.

George, 65, who retired from leading Canada's largest oil company in 2011 but has continued to be involved in the industry as chairman of junior Osum Oil Sands Corp., blames the extended low-oil-price cycle and government actions for the ongoing investment exodus...continue reading

Kenneth Chan Jul 19, 2017

How, when and where can Canada's digital spies hack? Government makes some suggestions in CSE Act
Proposed law would define how CSE spies can hack into foreign systems
By Matthew Braga, CBC News Posted: Jun 20, 2017

The Canadian government is proposing new legislation that, for the first time, would explicitly define how and when the country's digital spies can hack into computer networks and infrastructure around the world.

If accepted, the Communications Security Establishment Act would expand the spy agency's mandate to include two types of "foreign cyber operations" - attack and defence - and introduce new authorizations that would codify many of the operations the agency already conducts....continue reading

Why it's Vital to Review the Progress of Your Business
It's easy to focus only on the day-to-day running of your business, especially in the early stages. But once you're up and running, it can pay dividends to think about longer-term and more strategic planning. This is especially true as you take on more staff, create departments within the business, appoint managers or directors and become distanced from the everyday running of the business.
Reviewing your progress will be particularly useful if you feel:
  • uncertain about how well the business is performing
  • unsure if you're getting the most out of the business or making the most of market opportunities
  • your business plan may be out of date, e.g. you haven't updated it since you started trading
  • your business is moving in a direction different to the one you had planned
  • the business may be becoming unwieldy or unresponsive to market demands
It is also useful if you have decided that your company is ready to move on to another level... continue reading

3. UPGRADE CANADA'S REGULATORY SYSTEM TO GET NATURAL RESOURCES AND OTHER EXPORTS TO WORLD MARKETS

Although we often focus on how government steers the economy through taxation, a more direct and immediate tool is regulation. Regulation plays an important role in shaping the economy and securing the well-being and safety of citizens. Unfortunately, Canada's regulatory environment is often a collection of complicated, overlapping and inefficient sets of rules.
