Do you know a business in Spruce Grove or the surrounding area that you believe delivers outstanding customer service, provides a product or service the community requires, and actively participates in the support of community events.

Big increases to minimum wage are becoming fashionable in Canada: first Alberta (from $12.20 currently to $15 in October 2018), then B.C. (from $10.35 to $11.35 in September 2017) and now Ontario (from $11.40 to $15.00 in January 2019, a 30% hike in 18 months). Are workers better off or does it mean fewer jobs? The debate has been ferocious because economists don't agree, but let's look at the fundamentals.

The Bank of Canada's decision to raise its key interest rate to 0.75 per cent today was entirely expected. The bigger question was what's next: is the central bank's intention to simply reverse the two rate cuts made in 2015 that dealt with the oil price crash? Or is today the start of a path toward higher interest rates?
Despite the bank's upbeat tone, Governor Stephen Poloz was reluctant to commit to either scenario. "I'm hesitating to classify it as either one of those stories," he said at a press conference this morning. "There's no predetermined path at this stage. It would be easy to write off the oilsands - as many government and investor types are doing - if it weren't for relentless optimists such as Rick George.
The former chief executive of Suncor Energy Inc., who more than anyone transformed the Alberta oil deposits into an economic force, believes they are due for a rebound.
George, 65, who retired from leading Canada's largest oil company in 2011 but has continued to be involved in the industry as chairman of junior Osum Oil Sands Corp., blames the extended low-oil-price cycle and government actions for the ongoing investment exodus...continue reading
