Why We Run:  your story matters!
ELLEN (JMT-MCM)

"My uncle Frank died of melanoma on March 15th on the day of my 20-mile training run for the Boston Marathon. It was my first marathon and I was running for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society ... and I told myself that if I ran another marathon for charity it would be for melanoma.  Personally, when I was 19 years old, I got a call from a dermatologist (while I was tanning on the beach in Cape Cod) saying that the spot on my face I had noticed a month before was actually a tumor and they needed to do more testing.  I made an appointment for Moh's surgery and fortunately after having the surgery and examining the tumor, they discovered it was benign. With that being said, my skin is something I now recognize to be precious, and I am eager to bring awareness to skin cancer and raise money to help fund research for skin cancer.  I also have a background in medical research (I worked in drug product development/formulation, and I currently work in consulting for hospitals and health care organizations) so I understand the importance of research finding cures. I am honored to run with Jack's Team."

*IMPORTANT*
JMT-NYC ACTION REQUIRED
TCS-NYC BAGGAGE AND TRANSPORTATION

Baggage and transportation options for the 2017 TCS New York City Marathon will open tomorrow, July 11, 2017, at 12:00 noon ET. Options fill on a first-come, first-served basis so we recommend that runners make their selections as soon as possible.
Starting at noon tomorrow, runners may review their options, and log in to their My NYRR account to make their selections. (Note: only runners who are registered for the TCS New York City Marathon in My NYRR may make these selections.)

Baggage

Review the baggage options here. A quick note on baggage: On race day, runners must leave Central Park via the exit that corresponds to their baggage option. If a runner chooses the bag-check option, we will not order him/her a poncho, and he/she will not be able to claim one after completing the race, even if he/she decides not to check a bag after all.

Transportation
Review the transportation options here. A quick note on transportation: If a runner does not want official TCS New York City Marathon transportation to the start, he/she should select "I do not need transportation."

JMT-Chi: Melissa Trupia - "The kids worked it this afternoon and raised $140 in less than 2 hours from our generous neighbors"

Cocktails for a Cause
JMT-Chicago:  Sandy Voyles Straley, Kim Hooper Paulding and Cathy Bobbe from Utah had a super fun time at their Cocktails for a Cause, raising over $1500 in honor of Kim's dad - Dan 'Hoop' Hooper. The party was held to celebrate Sandy's birthday.

Bags Tournament
A few year ago, a JMT runner held a bags tournament at one of the favorite neighborhood pubs ... raised over $2000.

Give It Up
To demonstrate how the smallest donation can make a difference, ask fundraisers to give up a daily beverage or meal and donate the money to a worthwhile cause instead. Intensify the appeal by asking supporters to participate for a certain number of days or encouraging them to meet a personal goal.
Free Skin Screening
Ask your dermatologist to volunteer two hours to conduct a free skin screening.

Many docs are more than happy to give their time as long as you take care of all the details and promotions. Set it up at your health club or with your local swim team.  Any donations will go toward your marathon fundraiser to help fight melanoma!

A nod to cooking reality TV,
try rounding up supporters and foodies around a friendly culinary competition.
Contestants create their best dishes with a specific ingredient,

This works well for celebrations around July 4th.
- Rib Fest
- Cupcake bake off
- Apple Pie
- Baked Beans
Employer Match
A great way to meet your fundraising goal is through employer matching grants.
Many employers are happy to match or double match a donation.
Check with your employer or anyone who has already donated to your efforts.
