Dancing with Nature

July 2017 Issue 5 Vol 7
News, Life and the Art Culture in the Smoky Mountains

It's JULY!! The afternoons have been heating up here but the mornings and evenings are a delight. The flowers are in bliss. The rhododendron are having a late bloom season in the higher elevations.   All is green and lush.

The thought of summer brings back early childhood memories of swim lessons at the "city" pool. With towel in hand, my siblings and I trekked down to the high school where we caught a school bus to transport us there.
June Falls by Sarah Sneeden
Early evenings we chased the mosquito trucks spraying who knows what that we in haled as we ran or rode our bikes in fast pursuit. At nightfall we caught fireflies then let them go in a darkened hall inside the house producing an illuminous show. Fresh corn, field peas, tomatoes and cold watermelon were a common fare. And then there were mountain vacations =). Where do your summertime memories take you?

On a more serious note, Main Street lost two icons in the past couple of weeks. With great sadness, I write of the passing of David Erickson and MaryEtta Burr. Both were very instrumental in creating our art community that thrives today.

In 2007 we purchased Twigs and Leaves from David Erickson and wife Kaaren Stoner, co-crea tors of the gallery in 1998. David brought an amazing background to the mix. He has been an inspiration and mentor to us through our transition of ownership. Past visitors to the gallery remember him for his engaging conversation, genuine interest and exceptional knowledge of the arts along with a winning smile. After an extended illness David passed away days before the couple's 50th wedding anniversary.

MaryEtta Burr, owner of Burr Studio, passed away suddenly on 4th of July eve as she picnicked with friends. Just days before she had been in the gallery telling me with much excitement about going to Pennsylvania to see the synchronized fireflies. With her passing, I was happy to know that she did that bucket list check and it reminded me to make more checks.

To their friends and families, with my deepest sympathies I wish you a peaceful heart.

On a happier note ~ we are now entering Folkmoot, a 10-day festival of folk dance and world culture featuring 275 dancers and musicians from around the globe. The town is transformed as the street is lined with flags from all over the world and the courthouse is flanked with flags from visiting counties. Excitement fills the air in anticipation of the music, the dance, the cultural exchange.

So, for me, this July evokes memories, anticipation, and the reminder to live each day to the fullest.
In joy

Potter

A resident potter for the John Campbell Folk School, Michael Lalone will be demonstrating in Twigs and Leaves Gallery during Art After Dark Friday evening, August 4th, 6-9PM.

Mike's strength is in his love of teaching and sharing what others have so freely given to him.

Friday evening, as you stroll through the gallery's 140+ primarily regional artists, enjoy piano music and delight in the savory hors d'eurves.

Joyce Schlapkohl
Painter
Joyce, a Greensboro, NC native, lived in South Florida for 34 years before returning with her husband to Waynesville. Joyce is a graduate of the University of North Carolina.   Most of her training as a painter has come from workshops with professional artists that are nationally known as impressionists. She has taught and held workshops in watercolor and oil and is a Signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina.

Joyce says, "I describe my style as 'painterly realism' with an emphasis on the  focal point using light and shadow and their interaction on a variety of subjects. I'm inspired by our beautiful nature and objects that I find esthetically pleasing.  Whether I'm painting flowers, landscapes, animals, or a still life, I look for an emotional attachment to the subject. My paintings are to be uplifting and a pleasure for the viewer to enjoy. These Blue Ridge Mountains are forever changing and bringing daily painting material that is spectacular and a blessing."
