Message from Executive Director
Walter X. Kalman
NASW-NJ Welcomes Dr. Tawanda Hubbard as President
On July 1, 2017, Tawanda Hubbard, DSW, LCSW became President of
NASW-NJ
. Dr. Hubbard holds the distinction of being the first African-American woman to be president of our Chapter.
Prior to this, she
has been an integral part of helping NASW-NJ navigate the last few
years in her roles as Vice President and President-Elect
.
Dr. Hubbard's dedication to NASW-NJ is exemplary and we look forward to working with her over the next two years. Please join me in welcoming her to this new role!
In celebrating this transition, we also want to acknowledge the
dedicated work of our Immediate Past President, David Barry. Mr. Barry's leadership, expertise, and sense of humor have brought us to through exciting and challenging times. Thank you, David Barry!
Take Action to Protect Client Confidentiality
Too often in NJ, insurance companies have pressured social workers and agencies to provide information that is considered privileged by the Board of Social Work Examiners (BSWE/Licensing Board). In response to this conflict, NASW-NJ and the NJ Society for Clinical Social Work have worked with Senator Gordon and Assemblywoman Vainieri-Huttle to introduce the Confidentiality Bill (S2805/A4355). We also thank Senator Cardinale for signing on as a co-sponsor.
When signed into law, this bill will limit insurance companies, for many policies, to requesting only information allowed by the same Regulations you follow for your Social Work license.
With the help of NASW-NJ Members who stepped up, wrote letters and gave testimony, the bill recently passed the NJ Senate. Now insurance company lobbyists are gearing up to oppose our bill in the Assembly. It will be a formidable task to prevent their objections from derailing this important legislation, which a great many of you have sought over the years.
If you have experienced an insurance company asking for information to which they are not entitled, please let us know. Your written or spoken testimony, as well as your personal advocacy with your legislators (all of whom are up for re-election in November) is critical in passing S2805/A4355.
Please contact our Advocacy Associate, Anthony Gallo, at [email protected] or
(732) 296-8070 ext. 15 to share your story.

Meet Our Office Volunteer
|
Meaghan Flaherty
I began volunteering with NASW-NJ in the beginning of June 2017. I was lucky enough to grow up in a family that made helping people a priority and decided to extend this lifestyle into a career. Since graduating from Rutgers School of Social Work, I have continued to seek knowledge and experience in all aspects of social work to improve my advocacy skills and overall understanding of the profession. Volunteering with NASW-NJ has afforded me this opportunity while additionally allowing me to support those helping others.
Thanks Meaghan- we're so happy to have you here too!
