Dear Friends,
Much has been published about Millennials lately. New videos citing facts and expert opinions are circulating on social media yielding millions and millions of views. Many groups are still trying to figure out how to engage Millennials in everything from purchasing to career pathing to community service. I'm not exactly sure of the source of all this new hype. I mean, Millennials have been in the work force for at least a decade now. By some accounts, Millennials are turning 40 this year. Haven't we figured them out yet?
Part of the confusion might be because they are so hard to pin down as a generation. Some research would suggest that Millennials were born between 1977 ~ 1995. Other research suggests that they were born between 1980 ~ 1999 or 1984 ~ 2004. Still other research suggests that the earlier group is Generation Y and that Millennials are a completely separate and distinct group born later. There is only one generation that has been officially defined by the US Census Bureau and that is the Baby Boomer Generation from 1946 to 1964. The newer generations are constantly being redefined.
So, how can we engage with members of a generation that is constantly changing? How can we attract young people to our companies, service groups, and community organizations? The answer is simple. LEADERSHIP. And it's not a one-size-fits-all proposition. LEADERSHIP, as taught by Leadership Harrisburg Area, is rooted in relationships and relationships take time & patience. If you want to earn the loyalty of a young person, let's just say under 40 years of age, talk to them. Ask their opinion. Listen. Give them some autonomy. Allow them to safely fail and help them find the lessons in that failure. Consider new approaches to projects based on their ideas. There is one thing for certain, we can't do things the same way and expect young people to conform to our systems. It is up to current leaders to develop new ways to attract young people to our jobs and volunteer opportunities and then build the relationships that will keep them engaged for the long term. In some cases, it is up to us as leaders to coach, mold, and teach young people HOW to have successful relationships. It won't always be easy, but it will be worth it. Millennials bring creativity and tech savvy and purpose to their work and all of our organizations can benefit from them.
It's time to figure this out because in a few short years, members of Generation Z will be on the job market. That's when things will get really interesting!
