Wellesley Books Newsletter
  August 2nd, 2017
Even though it is still summer, everyone in the store is growing extremely excited about the books being released in the final quarter of the year.  The titles are trickling in from publishers, and it looks like there will be something for every reader's literary palate.  For example, Ken Follett is releasing the final book in his Pillars Of The Earth trilogy, entitled A Column Of Fire.  Andy Weir, author of The Martian, unveils Artemis, a heist adventure set on the moon.  There will be new literary fiction from Jennifer Egan (Manhattan Beach), Celeste Ng (Little Fires Everywhere), Alice McDermott (The Ninth Hour), and Jeffrey Eugenides (Fresh Complaint).  If you like mysteries and suspense novels, you will see new thrillers from Sue Grafton (Y Is For Yesterday), Louise Penny (Glass Houses), Harlan Coben (Don't Let Go), and Dan Brown (Origin).  In kids and young adult books, we will soon get to read John Green's Turtles All The Way Down, Dav Pilkey's Dog Man And Cat Kid, and Philip Pullman's long-awaited The Book Of Dust.  If you prefer non-fiction, we will have memoirs from Amy Tan, Armistead Maupin, and Patti Smith and history books like Grant by Ron Chernow, We Were Eight Years In Power by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Leonardo Da Vinci by Walter Isaacson.  This is merely the tip of the new release iceberg, and you can learn more about any of these books (or even pre-order them) by clicking on the highlighted title.  It's going to be an amazing year for reading!
Bill's Book Group For Guys

by Denis Johnson

This National Book Award-winner scathingly riffs on the Vietnam War, disinformation programs, disillusion and atonement, and the many personalities of Americans as seen through the eyes of one CIA operative.  It is brilliant and epic in scope.

Join Bill's Book Group for Guys for a relaxed evening in the store discussing a specially-chosen book while enjoying a beer, glass of wine, or select single-malt whiskey.  $25 buys the book and a ticket to the event.
Betty's Lunchtime Book Group

Bookseller Recommendations

William Recommends:

The Breakdown by B.A. Paris
The heroine of this new thriller had a mother who suffered from early-onset dementia, and she is terrified of eventually inheriting the disease.  One night, she passes a parked car in the rain.  The next morning, she discovers that the woman in the car, someone she knew, was murdered.  Then, she begins to forget things.  Is the killer stalking her or is it all in her deteriorating mind?  This thriller is a lot of fun, fast-paced, and features a likable lead character who is the most unreliable narrator ever.  It's a perfect summer read, and it will have you cheering.

Barry Recommends:

The Usefulness Of Useless Knowledge by Abraham Flexner and Robbert Dijkgraaf
A 1939 essay by Flexner, the founding director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, is followed by a 2017 companion essay written by the Institute's current director, Dutch physicist Dijkgraaf. Both are pleas on behalf of what is called basic research -- something of an endangered species these days -- and the pure, unimpeded intellectual curiosity that commonly drives it.  Up in the Institute for Advanced Study in the Sky, da Vinci, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Einstein, and Fermi nod vigorously in agreement with this small jewel of a book.

Peter Recommends:

When The English Fall by David Williams
An Amish community finds itself under threat from the societal chaos unleashed in the wake of a massive solar storm.  For farmer Jacob, who has been keeping a diary, the catastrophe has a personal aspect -- his troubled young daughter appears to have foretold the coming of the "skies bright with angel wings". This poignant story is, at heart, a meditation on the meaning of faith and devotion to family and community when truly put to the test. Jacob's voice resonates long after one turns the last page.

Phyllis Recommends :

The Dinner Party by Joshua Ferris
This is a somewhat edgy and totally wonderful collection of character-driven short stories.  Wide ranging in perspective, location, and situation,  these tales all deal with human nature -- often in uncomfortable situations.  Ferris' trademark wit and humor are evident throughout.  Excellent reading!
