The Wild Side: Sounds of Summer
Did you know that a male katydid makes a call that sounds like its name and it can be heard mostly at night? Katydids belong to the order of insects known as Orthopterans. Other Orthopterans are grasshoppers, locusts, and crickets.
Many of the Orthopterans are known for making sounds by rubbing their legs together or rubbing their wings against their legs. Cicadas also produce sounds but they belong to the insect order Hemiptera and unlike katydids they call mostly during the day.
Want to learn more about these amazing insects and how to recognize their calls? Join us for our Sounds of Summer: Insect Song Workshop on August 12, 9 a.m.-noon. Preregistration is required. Visit our website to register.
