DNREC Wetlands Training

Thank you to Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) for training MCBP staff in the Mid-Atlantic Tidal Wetland Rapid Assessment Method (MidTRAM). This assessment is used to determine the condition of tidal wetlands on a watershed-wide scale. DNREC's Alison Rogerson trained staff both in the classroom and in the field on how to perform this assessment.

Fond Farewell
MCBP says goodbye to Asia and Karley!
We would like to thank Worcester County Economic Development for providing us with such a fantastic intern, Asia Mason. Asia assisted with in tasks ranging from water quality sampling, invasive species removal, bay discovery educational programs, and much more. We wish her the best as she enters her junior year at University of Maryland College Park.

We also would like to express our gratitude to ShoreCorps AmeriCorps for pairing us with Karley LeCompte. Over the last year at MCBP, Karley has worked on numerous projects. Some of these include colonial nesting bird monitoring, assisting with our oyster gardening project, helping with our Ten Days for the Bays and Discover Your Watershed  volunteer programs, and much more. We will miss her as she enters her senior year at Salisbury University.
Green Bulkheads
New monitoring project underway!

Our environmental interns, Brenna and Maddie, have designed a monitoring protocol to determine the success of our green bulkhead project. The project was installed in 2013 in partnership with University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and the Town of Ocean City in an effort to soften shorelines and provide habitat. The green bulkheads consist of three levels; a submerged SAV level, an inter-tidal low marsh level, and a high marsh level.

During their study, Brenna and Maddie will comparing the green bulkhead project to near-by bare bulkhead controls. They are comparing water quality, biodiversity, and habitat value between the experiment and control.

Education Corner
EE Programs dive into summer!

There is only one month of summer left, and we are sad to see it go! Our weekly summer programs have been successful in attendance and outreach.  We have also organized and executed a few day programs for local day cares, public school teachers, and summer camps.

Most recently, MCBP partnered with Assateague State Park and the Maryland Conservation Corps to provide a fun, education-filled day for the students of UMES' Upward Bound program.  On July, 28th, over 50 students traveled to the state park to learn about our bays, try their hand at crabbing, identify phytoplankton, and go on a nature hike.

For teachers wishing to collaborate with MCBP for the fall, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Yours in EE,
Liz
