Sometimes petting and brushing your dog isn't enough during a visit. Working for prolonged periods of time with kids or elders sometimes calls for a few extra "tricks up your sleeve." We have created a fun, hour-long class that will give you scads of ideas on easy, simple activities you can incorporate into your visits - with not much more than you already have - a dog, treats, and a few well chosen "things" to bring along.

PAWS Office, Newark, DE
Many PAWS teams visit with elders, several of whom are in various stages of dementia. Our Thinking Outside the Box program trains therapy companions to better understand dementia and Alzheimer's, recognize displaying behaviors, while also guiding teams on how to provide the best visit possible to someone following this path. In better understanding why folks are behaving in a particular manner, teams can provide a more personalized visit that supports the elder. Teams are also able to assist site staff in accomplishing some of the tasks/goals that may become difficult with a person suffering with dementia.

Wouldn't you like to know what your dog is thinking? He's telling you A LOT - but it's all through body language. Learn about the ways your dog is communicating his feelings and thoughts to you and what you can do when you begin to get the message.

PAWS for Reading - End of Year Celebrations |
|
As the school year comes to a close, many of our PAWS for Reading and PAWS PreK teams who visit at school have sent in pictures and stories from their classroom visits. It is fantastic to see so many smiles and hear about not only improvement in reading but also increased self confidence and less or no more fear of dogs! Thank you all for making these things possible!
Here is just one of the wonderful e-mails.
"A class of 3-year-old children at the Early Learning Center made a lot of progress this year learning how to be safe around dogs. Children who were afraid of Sienna last September became comfortable petting her and giving her treats. They learned to ask "May I pet your dog" and hold out a hand for for the dog to sniff before approaching and petting a dog. Sienna is a welcome visitor and enjoys outdoor walks with the class. The children practice how to walk a very patient Sienna with heels and halts in the school hall. Preschool class 6 gets a big high five for a fun year and a great job."
