Member Benefit: Charter the schooner EROS!
The Museum has two very special ladies at the docks this summer, one of which is the 115' staysail schooner EROS. She was built in England in 1939, and was immediately commandeered by the British Navy for the war effort. She is believed to have participated in the evacuation of Dunkirk. From 1945 until the 70s, she was the private yacht of Greek shipping billionaire Stavros Niarchos, who restored her after the ravages of wartime. EROS recently underwent a massive plank-off restoration and is once again in pristine condition. She's in New England for the summer and will be at the Herreshoff Museum docks on and off until October.
EROS will donate 10% of the charter fee to the museum for any charter resulting from this email (summer 2017 and the coming winter season in the Caribbean). In addition, all extras including food, beverages and fuel - normally an additional cost - will be included in the charter fee for museum members.

Ahead of His Time: Sailing World's Story on AMARYLLIS
During the break between the two weekends of racing at the 35th America's Cup in Bermuda, Sailing World ran a nice article by our friend Joe Berkeley about Captain Nat's catamaran AMARYLLIS (1876) and our replica AMARYLLIS II (1933) on
Sailingworld.com.
Joe wrote the article and spent a day at the museum shooting pics as a team of staff and volunteers rigged her up outside the museum. We're not planning on taking her sailing anytime soon, but she looked like she could still do 20 knots!

Remembering Doug Peterson
We're gutted to learn of the passing of Doug Peterson this June. Aside from being one of our Class of 2017 inductees into the America's Cup Hall of Fame, he was an incredibly talented yacht designer who produced a winning portfolio of iconic yachts and mentored a number of today's most prolific designers.
The thoughts and prayers of all of us here at the Herreshoff Marine Museum are with Doug's family and friends, and we hope we can do his legacy justice at the AC Hall of Fame Induction Gala on board the USS Midway in October.
Wherever he is now, we imagine there's a steady sea breeze and he's on the lifted tack.

The Inaugural Designer Series Rendezvous:
A Unique Kind of Yachting Event
We were thrilled to be the host venue for the inaugural Designer Series Rendezvous honoring renowned yachtsman, sailmaker and naval architect, Ted Hood.
Yachts designed by Mr. Hood along with their owners, friends, and the public were invited to participate in a three-day celebration showcasing his enormous contribution to the sailing world. The event kicked off with an "Open Boat" Dock party surrounded by Ted Hood designs including his flagship America's Cup 12-meter, Nefertiti. The Hood family brought "Robin," Ted Hood's first boat built in 1959.
On Saturday, the sailboats competed in a pursuit race around Prudence Island while the powerboats were invited to compete in a Predicted Log race or raft up in Potter's Cove. That evening, there was a clambake under the tent, and the event wrapped up on Sunday with the Designer Series Parade of Boats.

Tilly XV is in the House!
One of our favorite non-HMCo. boats, the Sonderklasse yacht TILLY XV, is visiting the museum for the next few weeks.
Built in 1912 for Prince Heinrich von Preussen, brother of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia, her design is based on BIBELOT (HMCo #699 - 1910). She'll be in the Hall of Boats until August 8th, so come on down and check her out. She'll be sailing in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge in August, but this is a great chance to get up close and personal with this incredibly unique design!

Waterfront Updates
We have recently completed the first of many new features coming to our waterfront. With the help of Bristol landscape architect Gary Watros, The Museum waterfront now features a beautiful garden structure. The plants are still budding, but it will be full of beautiful flowers and greenery soon, and will provide a much-improved entry area for your event at the museum.

In TUGBOATS ILLUSTRATED, architect Paul Farrell- tugboat enthusiast and masterful artist-brings his passion to a volume that details every aspect of tugs and their work, from the little boom boats that corral riverborne logs near sawmills to the massive ocean salvage vessels that are often as big as the ships they tow.

New Youth Summer Boatbuilding Program
The Herreshoff Marine Museum, in partnership with
RIMTA, has created a new Summer Boatbuilding Program for youth between ages 14-16 who want to learn more about the marine trades.
The six-week program incorporates work experiences, career exploration, sailing instruction, leadership development, adult mentoring, basic skills development and job readiness services. Participants gain basic, academic and employment skills, earn their diploma and gain paid work experience, and receive a certificate of completion from RIMTA and HMM, all while learning to build Westport skiffs and from master shipwright Dan Shea on the historic Herreshoff campus. Participants will receive a weekly $100 stipend.
This summer's program is at capacity and underway, however, we will be running a second Boatbuilding Program in the Fall with RIMTA. If you have any questions,

Spring/Summer Appeal
We're wrapping up our Spring/Summer 2017 Appeal, and we could really use your help. We're close to our goal, and while we'd hoped to wrap it up by the end of June, we want to see if we can get there.

In Memory of Richard V. Simpson
October 31, 1935 - July 4, 2017
Bristol Author & Historian
Goat Island and the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station (2016) is the most recent and last book authored by Bristol historian and good friend of the museum, Richard Simpson. It covers a century of the station's history from its founding in 1869. Richard's book is based upon 30 years of personal research and collecting of materials about the station, his prior book, Building the Mosquito Fleet: U.S. Navy's First Torpedo Boats (2001) and official Navy histories of the station.
One of the most active periods at the Torpedo Station was from 1890 to 1897 when the U.S. Navy's only two torpedo boats, both built by Herreshoff, were testing the first automobile torpedoes and developing tactics for their employment. This paper is a summary of what transpired in those years.

Congratulations to Emirates Team New Zealand for winning the 35th America's Cup! The Museum streamed the final three days of racing on the big screen in the Hall of Boats, and local fans and staff gathered together to root on their favorite team. It truly was an exciting AC Series. We are looking forward to see what our Kiwi friends have in store for 2021! |
