Stuff the Bus! July 1 - July 31st
It's time again to Stuff the Bus! We had around 400 teachers from the Wood County and the Belpre school districts respond to us with needs for the upcoming school year. We will be Stuffing the Bus the whole month of July trying to collect all of the needs of these local teachers.

We are working directly with the teachers to fill needs, so we're collecting the following items: pencils, markers, crayons, glue sticks, Dry-Erase markers, child scissors, folders, highlighters, paper, notebook, and erasers. If you can help fill these needs please bring them to any WVCCU location so we can Stuff the Bus by the end of July.

Color Me Fun Walk & Run

The 4th Annual Color Me Fun 5K Walk & Run was a great success! We raised $10,000 for Children's Miracle Health Network. One hundred percent of every dollar received went to help our local hospital, WVU Children's Hospital in Morgantown, WV. The event took place on June 10th in downtown Parkersburg at 9 am. There were around 250 participants and over 100 volunteers. We would like to thank our sponsors and volunteers for helping make this event a success. If you would like to see pictures of this event or keep an eye out for next years event, follow us on Facebook (WVCCU).

Why I love Credit Unions!

When I graduated from college and was ready to begin a career, I knew absolutely nothing about credit unions. I did not know what they did or why I would have interest in being a member. At the time, what I did know was that I was newly engaged to be married and I felt in all fairness to my wife to be that I should be gainfully employed. I also felt that I needed to be employed before she had any real time to question why she said yes in the first place.

After some searching I learned that a job was open as a consultant for the WV Credit Union League. Sounded perfect since they say that "those that can do and those that can't consult". I got the job despite my lack of real understanding of what I was going to be doing. I also found out quickly that I needed a reliable vehicle to do my job. I applied for my very first loan (many more to come) and the manager at WV League Central CU approved that loan despite me having no real credit history. She trusted me as a person and gave me that must needed boost to get my life started. I fell in love with my credit union and the credit union philosophy that very day! 34 years later, I can still say that taking that job, which I was so unqualified for, was one of the best decisions that I ever made.

Here are a few additional reasons why I love credit unions:
  1. I am an owner! All members are regardless of how much money we may have or how long we may have been a member!
  2. I am treated as a very important person! I am given access to the best accounts and paid the best dividends on my savings, charged the lowest rates on loans and experience almost no fees!
  3. Things that are important to me are important to my credit union! Credit unions are not required to be involved in their communities. They do so because they care!
  4. My credit union wants me to be successful and provides me with educational tools and opportunities to assure that I make the most of my life!

I could share many other reasons but these four covers a lot of what makes credit unions special.

At times all we can ask for is an opportunity. WV Central strives to do just that by helping our members to get ahead, to own that new car, to buy that home, to send a child to college. We are here to help - to make a difference.

If you would like to share what makes your credit union special to you please do so by sending your thoughts to me at [email protected]. We would love to hear your thoughts and with your permission we might share them.

Please tell your friends and families about the credit union difference. Some things are just too good to be kept secret!

Security Reminders

Here are a few tips to keep your computer safe while reading e-mails:

  1. If you don't recognize the sender of an e-mail, don't open it.
  2. Many fake emails try to deceive you with the threat that your account is in jeopardy if you don't provide immediate updates.
  3. Some fake emails are made to look like a website in order to get you to enter personal information.
  4. While no one is perfect, fake emails often contain misspellings, incorrect grammar, missing words, and gaps in logic. Mistakes like this help fraudsters avoid spam filters.
  5. Many fake emails begin with a generic greeting like "Dear Member". If you do not see your name in the salutation, be suspicious and do not click on any links or attachments.
