Noted 17th century English Philosopher Thomas Hobbes shared an appropriate view for this time of year. He said "leisure is the mother of philosophy." In our 21st century interpretation, we see Hobbes suggesting that vacation time offers a unique opportunity for an uncluttered mind to do some valuable learning and thinking.

As you relax during what we hope will be a peaceful summer vacation, you might have some solitary time where your mind wanders a bit to work and perhaps a peak at the future. If it does, and you have the interest, perhaps a bit of thinking and reading on leadership will be helpful

A Good Think

Here are a few areas that leaders might ponder. Think about how you would respond to these questions. Click on the link provided to access a more in depth discussion of the topic.

Self Awareness - Do you know yourself well? Do you know how you are perceived by your leadership team and your employees? Do you need to focus and hone in on specific traits for development?

Smart Listening
- Are you a great listener? Do you practice powerful skills of observation? Is your empathy level ade quate to understand what is "not said" in a conversation?

Learning Culture - Employees, especially millennials, are driven to learn, develop and grow. Has your senior team made a noticeable commitment to creating that culture and committing the resources to implement it?

Employee Engagement
- When viewing and evaluating the performance of your team members, are you fully aware of what factors really engage them in a way that positively impacts that  performance?

Hire the Best - Does your organization have a talent acquisition plan with clearly defined position requirements that also focuses on fit?  Do you have a structured vetting process?

A Good Read

Here are several well-regarded books that we believe warrant your consideration. While we included one classic list of "how to," the others are human interest stories with powerful leadership messages.
  • The Captain Class: The Driving Force Behind the World's Greatest Teams - Sam Walker
  • Radical Candor: Be A Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity - Kim Scott
  • Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box - The Arbinger Institute
  • The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You - John Maxwell
  • Own It: The Power of Women at Work - Sallie Krawcheck
  • Option B - Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant
While you might not profoundly wax philosophically as Hobbes did, you might very well pick up a few ideas that will make the coming year more stress-free and effective for you and your organization.

Enjoy!!
