Newest San Francisco Giants Pablo Sandoval has returned with his charm and charisma clearly in tact. Sandoval started his latest Giants stint with two games for the San Jose Giants over the weekend, producing a single in seven trips to the plate. On Tuesday Sandoval is reportedly headed for the Sacramento River Cats and may join the parent club as early as this coming Sunday. Photo by Larry Rosa.

San Francisco Giants

At very little financial risk, the San Francisco Giants have re-signed a former team member and World Series hero. Whether Pablo Sandoval can regain his big league form is unanswered but Kung Fu Panda has clearly ignited interest in the floundering team. Photo by Larry Rosa. |

Brandon Belt's leaping catch highlights the value of having a six-foot, five-inch, athletic first baseman. The ball arrived just in time and San Diego's hard-charging Jabari Blach was out on a close play. But the Padres scored four runs in the fourth inning and were never seriously challenged, as the Giants fell, 5-2, on Sunday, July 23. Photo by Rich Yee. |

Speedy and steady-hitting Eduardo Nunez of the San Francisco Giants continued to produce on Tuesday, July 18, with a single in the first inning against the AL Central leading Cleveland Indians. Above, Nunez crosses first base as Edwin Encarnacion waits for the throw. Nunez contributed another single in the 10th inning, driving in Conor Gillaspe for a 2-1 walk-off victory. Nunez is currently batting .305. Photo by Rich Yee. |

San Francisco Giants Update
|
Intense as ever, the Giants Hunter Pence follows the ball into the catcher's mitt, hoping to confirm it is not called a strike. The often-injured right fielder has seen his batting average slip of late, now resting at .247. The Giants suffered a 5-2 loss to the Padres on Sunday, dropping to 17-27 against the National League West and leaving them with their worst record after 100 games since 1956. Photo by Rich Yee.

San Francisco Giants Update:
It was a hectic week for the Giants, with a week full of games and off-the-field news as the trade deadline approaches. The Giants started the week by taking two out of three against the Indians, led by quality starts from Ty Blach and Matt Cain. San Francisco continued to struggle against divisional opponents, however, losing three out of four to the Padres. Roster news also provided excitement for Giants fans, as former fan-favorite Pablo Sandoval rejoined the organization after being waived by the Red Sox. Sandoval will begin his stint in the minors, but manager Bruce Bochy said he will evaluate the third baseman's play after a couple of weeks. In other positive news, pitchers Mark Melancon and Johnny Cueto both continue to progress in their rehab, each playing catch on Sunday. While Cueto currently has no timetable to return, Melancon hopes to be back in the action by mid-August. The Giants will finish their homestand with a series against the Pirates,
starting on Monday night.

Oakland A's

Oakland A's fans and teammates rise to salute pitcher Sonny Gray as he exited the Tampa Bay game in the seventh inning, possibly for the last time at home as his name has frequently come up in trade talks. The A's spanked the Rays, 7-2 on getaway day, July 19 and Gray improved his record to 6-4. Photo by Michael Zagaris. |

Oakland's shortstop Marcus Seminen tags out Tampa Bay right fielder Steven Souza at second base on an attempted steal in the first inning. The A's banged out 11 hits as they took the series finale of the three game set. Final score: Oakland 7, Rays 2.

San Francisco-based photographer Michael Zagaris (aka "Z") is a legend among his peers. And rightly so, with photographic treasures dating back more than 50 years, capturing the excitement of the '60s and featuring the likes of Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, Blondie and Mick Jagger, up to the present, where Z is in the forefront of San Francisco sports photographers in his role as the official lens man for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland A's. But overriding his extraordinary talent and dedication to his craft is his warm, generous spirit and contagious personality. (Z Man is pictured plying his trade at the A's/Cleveland game on Sunday, July 16, in the company of other photographers, one of whom may be trying to get a leg up on Z's legendary history!) Photo by Rich Yee. |
Oakland Athletics Update:
We are one week away from the trade deadline, which means rumors abound for two key Athletics. Ace Sonny Gray and All-Star first baseman Yonder Alonso are the two names most mentioned in trade rumors after relievers Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson were sent to the Washington Nationals last week. Gray seems to be the biggest trade attraction to the rest of the league, with the Brewers, Yankees, and Astros among the teams expressing interest. Each of these teams are looking to boost their rotation as they begin their playoff push, and Gray is one of the biggest attractions currently on the market. Rumors surrounding Alonso became a little more interesting this week as the Athletics called up first baseman Matt Olson from Triple-A and signed Chris Carter, another first baseman and former Athletic, to a minor league contract. These moves seem to signal an Alonso trade, but as of now both of the A's stars are still in Athletics jerseys. On the field this week, the Athletics will cross the border to visit the Blue Jays before coming home to face the Twins.

Football coaching staffs of all seven Oakland Athletic League (OAL) schools -- Castlemont, Fremont, Skyline, McClymonds, Oakland High, Oakland Tech and Madison Park -- gathered Saturday to be trained under the Heads Up Football Program of USA Football. For the second straight year the Raiders covered the costs for the four-hour training session, with OAL coaches and staffs learning such topics as proper heads-up tackling and blocking techniques, heat and hydration awareness, concussion recognition and response, and proper equipment fitting. Former NBA director of public relations,
Nick Curran.

Remembering
Bob Wolff
By Nick Curran
|
Who holds the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a sports broadcaster?
If you answered Bob Wolff, you are correct.
But this humble, dedicated man, whose career spanned 78 incredible years and who passed away quietly on July 15, isn't a household name throughout America.
Yet he should be.
He and Curt Gowdy are the only sportscasters inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, in Springfield, MA.
He called the play-by-play on radio for the only perfect game in World Series history, by Don Larsen of the New York Yankees, in 1956.
|
Announcer Bob Wolff, right, with Yogi Berra, recalling Don Larsen's perfect game in 1956
|
He called the play-by-play of the sudden death National Football League championship game in 1958 when the Baltimore Colts edged the New York Giants,
23-17.
He called the play-by-play of the New York Knicks when the Knicks won National Basketball Association championships in 1970 and 1973.
He was the play-by-play voice of the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League and the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League.
"If you added up all the time spent, about seven days of my life was standing for the National Anthem," Bob once told The New York Times.
During my seven and a half years as director of public relations for the National Basketball Association, our paths crossed regularly. He was well-liked and respected by everybody. By reputation I had known he was the voice of the Washington Senators and Minnesota Twins baseball teams from 1947-61. His knowledge of basketball and his interviewing style at Madison Square Garden showed he was equally skilled in the NBA.
Along the way he was the voice of the Detroit Pistons, Baltimore Colts, Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns. Bob began his professional broadcasting career on CBS radio in 1939 and last appeared on-air for Cablevision News 12 Long Island, when he delivered his final essay in February, at the age of 96.
He interviewed Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Joe Louis, in addition to thousands of other stars and would-be stars. He will be missed.
