Summer Imaginarium

~ This Sunday's Service ~

Laissez les bons temps rouler, "let the good time roll" or so goes this New Orleans expression! This morning Rev. Kevin will offer thoughts and reflections on the recent General Assembly, the new President of our UUA and our charge from the work and votes of the delegates in attendance.

What's happening in RE?

In the know...

Excerpt from the Annual Minister's report presented in conjunction with Annual Congregational Meeting, June 11, 2017.

"In February, our Director of Relgious Exploration (DRE) Sakenya McDonald presented to me and the Board of Trustees (BOT) that she wished to pursue her higher educational goals and completion of her Master Degree with Prescott College, she offered her resignation effective end  of the month.  Upon discussion with Sakenya and Tessa Reagan our Lead Teacher, it was determined to create a training/mentoring opportunity Sakenya welcomed the role of DRE  Consultant, and Tessa became Acting DRE.

Timeline of transition:
This was to be a gradual transfer of roles March through June 2017.  While initially envisioned to    be an internal transfer and welcoming of Tessa into the DRE role effective July, Tessa notified the Board and I in late May of having accepted a different full-time position. We close out our church year and we begin employment search for a new DRE who will create a strong program with lead teacher and childcare support as well support and care from all within Beacon. It takes a village... We offer appreciation and gratitude for both Sakenya and Tessa and the gifts they shared with our programming while with us here at Beacon."

A Summer Religious Exploration program is happening!
For all our parents and families with children, please know that I am committed to RE here at Beacon, as are your RE Committee, the Board of Trustees.  For July and August, we will be offering "one room schoolhouse" programming each Sunday.  There will be planned lessons and activities so make plans to come to Beacon on Sunday mornings; we'd love to see you! We are so very fortunate to have one of our former DRE's Kristine Pavlik and one of our High School Youth Maryalee Roazen in position as leads for this summer program.

Hiring a new DRE is underway -
The RE Committee and myself are in consultation and development of the DRE job description and we anticipate opening up the position the week of July 10.  We have been in conversation with prior DRE's and most recently a very productive exit interview with Sakenya as she makes her transition to her Graduate program focus, to gain their insights and thoughts for the program.  Thank you for your understanding and support of our summer teachers, the RE Committee and the RE Program here at Beacon.  We believe in the religious exploration of our children and youth and seek to offer the best programming that we can.  Please be in touch with me, or any of the members of the RE Committee: Kay Johnson, Trish Black, Dee Wegwert and Christina Boyd with any questions.
~ Our Whole Lives ~

Two OUR WHOLE LIVES CLASSES this fall - 5 th and 6 th grades and 7 th and 8 th grades.
The Beacon Religious Exploration program is pleased to announce two OUR WHOLE LIVES (OWL) classes for youth this fall. OWL provides accurate, developmentally appropriate information for all ages about a range of topics, including relationships, gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual health, and cultural influences of sexuality. Classes are facilitated by Beacon members who have received training and certification through the UUA. More information about OWL content is available at www.uua/org/re/owl .
It is our philosophy that parents are the primary sexuality educators for their children, and this is a way that our faith community supports parents in that effort.
Families from outside the Beacon congregation are very welcome to participate.
If you have a child in one of the grade levels, know families who might be interested, or have any questions, please contact Kay Doggett about the 5 th -6 th grade class (928-890-7773   [email protected] ) or Dee Wegwert about the 7 th -8 th grade class (1-928-660-8815   [email protected] ).
Download the attached flyer to see the full class schedule and requested participant donations to cover food and curriculum expenses.  And watch for more information in a direct email to Beacon members and friends.

~ Art Exhibitions at Beacon for July and August  ~

And Now For Something Different - New Art At Beacon

For July And August we are displaying the exciting work of textile artist and man about town Jamie Hasapis. The pieces in this exhibit were created using a technique called "snow-dyeing". Fabric is covered with 8" - 10" of snow and then dyes are applied. As the snow melts the dye is absorbed randomly creating color, design and texture. "I never know what the end result will be....when I open the bundles I have these incredible gifts that I get to share."
In addition to his art, Jamey is a musician, singer and actor. He is also the host of Radio Sunnyside's Community Conversation  on Monday mornings at  10 a.m.

The Flagstaff Freethinkers
Friday, July 14
5:00 pm
The Flagstaff Freethinkers have a speaker coming to Beacon. Her name is Tory Roberg, Government Affairs Director from Secular Coalition for Arizona. She has been working hard for church/state separation at our state capital. This isn't an anti-church effort, in fact some of the Secular Coalition board membership and liaison organizations ARE churches, much like Citizens United for the Separation of Church and State which is headed by the Reverend Barry Lynn. This effort more about protecting Civil Liberties, Science-Based Medicine and fighting for Social Justice. She will be up in Flagstaff presenting on the last legislative session and the challenges looking forward.
