Arts Advocates Win Permanent Boost of $6.8M in State Funding

Arts advocates achieved another milestone in the state budget passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor two weeks ago, making permanent last year's one-time only increase of $6.8 million. The funding elevates California Arts Council's grantmaking budget to over $15 million from the general fund, and is augmented by funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Arts License Plate . Additionally, the Arts in Corrections Program in the Department of Corrections received a $2 million boost to $8 million. That program is administered by the California Arts Council.
ArtsOC President & CEO Rick Stein commented, "Thanks to the efforts of arts concerned citizens throughout California, we have enlightened our elected officials about not only the intrinsic value of the arts to the quality of life in our state but also the role they can and do play in addressing other issues. Their ability to keep kids in school motivated, their mitigation of violence in prisons, their contribution to the creative workforce needs of our innovation economy are facts that really resonated with them. We are grateful to them for listening and investing a little more money in the arts." Stein just concluded a third and final one-year term as President of California Arts Advocates and its sister organization Californians for the Arts, and remains on their executive committees.

"Get Ready" Grants Available for Craftspeople from CERF+
|
If you are an artist or a group of artists with an ongoing history of producing a body of work in a craft discipline or disciplines (such as woodworkers, fiber artists, metalsmiths, glass potters, furniture makers, cultural-based craft, or alternative craft), and are a legal U.S. resident, you are eligible to apply for a "Get Ready" grant from CERF+ The Artists Safety Net to conduct activities that will help safeguard your studio, protect your career and implement other safety measures. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis. There are two deadlines: August 15 and November 15.

6 Arts Orgs Win OCCF Grants

A random drawing to incentivize nonprofits to update their OC Nonprofit Central profiles resulted in 6 local arts and culture organizations being awarded small operating grants by Orange County Community Foundation (among the 27 winners). They were: Saddleback Concert Chorale, Laguna Dance Festival, Orange County Educational Arts Academy, Ryman Arts, Pretend City, Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens.
