Questioning the status quo

It all started with one simple question:
Is this absolutely necessary? Up until then, best practice had dictated that measuring blood pressure in medical offices should be done in exam rooms only.

"I was curious and wanted to know why this was advisable," says Dr. Michelle Greiver,  a Family Physician in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. "I've learned that if something doesn't make sense to you, you need to ask questions. And if the answer doesn't satisfy you, then it's your responsibility to keep pressing until you find an answer that does."

Family Physician Dr. Michelle Greiver has conducted research into whether measuring blood pressure in medical offices should be done in exam rooms only.
Surgery best option for gallbladder attacks

Statistically, women are more likely to develop gallstones than men as hormones during and after a pregnancy can interfere with the flow of bile.
That pain in your abdomen may be more than indigestion; it could be pain from a gallbladder attack.

"From a surgeon's point of view, we would generally consider a gallbladder attack to be pain that lasts for 20 minutes or longer," says Dr. Lloyd Smith, Chief of Surgery and Program Medical Director.

Too hot to handle? Don't wait, remember to hydrate!

Dehydration, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat syncope and heat rash are some of the typical heat-related illnesses doctors see during summer.
In 2016, the Medical Officer of Health for the City of Toronto issued 14 heat alerts and 8 extreme heat alerts between May 15 and September 30.

"Dehydration, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat syncope and heat rash are some of the typical heat-related illnesses we see during summer," says Dr. Tiffany Florindo, a Family Physician in North York General Hospital's Rudy and Rita Koehler Family Medicine Teaching Unit.
