Farm Notes: Growing G

There are several factors that affect the rate of growth of a plant. The first is the intensity of the sun. A cloudy day will result in a lot less growth than a sunny day. Similarly, the length of the day will significantly affect the amount of growth in a day. With the longest days of the year being around the summer solstice of June 21st, the further along we get in the summer, the shorter the days. Less hours of sun, means less growth of a plant. This change is slow and can be predicted. The third greatest factor in growth is temperature. The baseline of temperature for most agricultural growth is 50 degrees. This means that a sunny 90 degree day will have twice as much growth as a sunny 70 degree day. If you add clouds to the temperature variation, a cloudy 70 degree day might have less than 25% growth compared to a sunny 90 degree day. It gets difficult to predict the week's harvest when we have roller coaster weather like the beginning of this week. This is why we appreciate your patience and understanding if the share changes from the beginning of the week to the end of the week.

Enjoy,
Farmer Dave
What's in The Share:
Week 7

We're getting into the swing of the season now. You can expect your CSA shares to have a wider variety of the best that the summer has to offer. Green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes and the peak of summer squashes are all highlights this week.

Vegetable Share:

  • Lettuce, Kale or Napa Cabbage
  • Slicing or Pickling Cucumbers
  • Beets or Carrots
  • Green beans
  • Summer Squash, Kousa Squash, Patty Pan or Zucchini
  • Hakurei Turnips or Radishes
  • Spring Onions
  • Green Garlic
  • Dill, Sage, Basil or Chives
  • Tomatoes
  • and more!
Fruit Share:
  • Blueberries
  • McIntosh or Cortland Apples
  • Raspberries or Strawberries (if we're lucky!)
This is what we are planning and hoping to harvest this week.  Ultimately Mother Nature has the last word so the actual contents of your share will vary.

Vegisode of the Week:
Veggies Getting Twisted!

In this Vegisode, Stacey and Denise will show you:

-how to use 2 different spiralizers: a hand held and one with a hand crank.
- How to spiralize different vegetables with the different blades including summer squash, zucchini, celeriac, sweet potato and beets
- Recipe rundown of 2 dishes: a roasted, spiralized sweet potato, celeriac and potato salad, and a cold toasted sesame cucumber salad with carrots and peppers.

Check out all our Vegisodes and subscribe to be notified when timely new videos are added. These videos are designed to help you make the most of your CSA share with tips on storing, preparing and preserving your veggies.

As the summer progresses we'll be adding more local and seasonal products.  For the food preservers in the group, we will be offering bulk quantities of some of our vegetables and fruits, on weeks that we have extra available.
Groundwork Share-a-Share Update

Thanks to generous donations by you (CSA members) to the Groundwork Share-A-Shareâ„¢ fund, we were able to subsidize the cost of shares in 2016 for over thirty individuals and families, as well as shares for local food pantries.

Please consider helping us in our efforts to make the CSA accessible to more families by donating to Groundwork Share-A-Share.
