| Adults with autism face gaps in jobs, services |

More than half of adults with autism in the United States who receive services lack a paying job, and about one-quarter go without critical services such as healthcare, transportation and assistance with job placements, a new analysis reveals.
These findings are among dozens of statistics included in the 2017 National Autism Indicators Report. The analysis is based on responses from state surveys of individuals with autism or developmental disabilities who receive at least one service. Read on... |

| Are You the Depressed Mom of a Child with Autism? |
| |
Autism is tough; here are some tools for coping.
A study conducted at the University of North Carolina suggests that "Mothers of children with autism may be prone to depression if they feel responsible for the cause or outcome of their child's disorder...". 50% of mothers with children with autism had elevated depression scores, compared to 15% to 21% in the other groups. Single mothers of children with disabilities were found to be more vulnerable to severe depression than mothers living with a partner.
Why Are Moms of Autistic Kids More Prone to Depression?
Dr. Dan Gottlieb of Philadelphia's NPR station WHYY commented on the study. To paraphrase, he suggested that mothers who feel they can never do enough for their child with autism are likely to suffer from depression.

| Large study shines spotlight on 'mosaic' mutations in autism |
| |
About 8 percent of de novo, or non-inherited, mutations in people with autism appear in only some of the body's cells, according to an analysis of sequences from nearly 20,000 people1. Previous studies missed the vast majority of these so-called 'mosaic mutations.'
The findings, published Monday in Nature Neuroscience, add to mounting evidence that mosaic mutations contribute to autism risk. These mutations arise after conception; the later they occur, the fewer cells they affect.
The new study relied on DNA from blood and saliva. Identifying the pattern of the mutations in the brains of people with autism might provide new insights into the condition's neural underpinnings, says lead investigator Christopher Walsh, chief of genetics at Boston Children's Hospital. "It might help us learn what parts of the brain are really critical to autism," he says. Read on... |

| Eye test could help diagnose autism |

A new study out in European Journal of Neuroscience could herald a new tool that helps physicians identify a sub-group of people with Autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The test, which consists of measuring rapid eye movements, may indicate deficits in an area of the brain that plays an important role in emotional and social development.
"These findings build upon a growing field of research that show that eye movement could serve as a window into a part of the brain that plays a role in a number of neurological and development disorders, such as Autism," said John Foxe, Ph.D., director of the University of Rochester Medical Center Del Monte Neuroscience Institute and co-author of the study. I was able to move him from Chula Vista School district where he was not receiving the best of services in anyway, to a Charter School close to the exit at Market st coming out of FWY 15. I was wondering if anyone could give me information of a young, responsable adult who could baby sit and transport my child from his new school to home at eastlake. And some days stay with him for a few hrs until I got back from work around 5pm. I will pay for miles and obviously for the care at home. NFAR Teacher's Grants for educators of students with autism.
Autism affects one in every 68 children in the United States, and a growing number of students each year the classrooms across San Diego County. Autism often affects the way the individual receives and processes information. A person with autism may also have sensory issues that interfere with learning.
To help, NFAR awards funding to educators to support the specialized academic needs of their students with autism. These grants give educators a vehicle for piloting new teaching tools, as well as funding of technology and programs that address key areas of concern for students with autism, such as social skills training, reading comprehension, developing effective communication skills for verbal and non-verbal students, as well as reducing sensory and behavioral issues that interfere with learning. Jeremiah's Ranch, a Fallbrook nonprofit that serves adults with developmental disabilities and their families, is seeking prom gown, tie, and bow tie donations for their World of Color gala event in August. Many adults with developmental disabilities never get the opportunity to participate in proms or school dances. This event will be a gala dance for adults with developmental disabilities. Donations of gowns and ties can be dropped off at Hidden Treasures Thrift Shop, 913 Main. Fittings will be on August 12 and August 19. The gala event will be on August 26 at North Coast Church. Include Autism's Inclusion Baseball League provides a fun and exciting baseball experience to youth who are diagnosed with autism, offering teams matched with peer pal volunteers from all over San Diego county. The goal of this sports inclusion program is to serve as a social bridge between kids and teens with a developmental disability and their typically developing peers. On the second Saturday of the month, September through June, teams of kids and teens with a developmental disability are paired up with local youth baseball players to promote a fun athletic experience for both the kids with autism, ages 8 - 22 (players do not have to be Community Coaching program participants) and young athletes in the community. Registration is $75 for the season.

| Parents and Children Needed for Student Research |
| |
My name is Shamayne Brown and I am a doctoral student at Alliant International University. This study is examining the attention abilities of kids with ASD and their parents. I am recruiting families with a child with ASD as well as families with typically developing children.
We are looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who have a diagnosis of ASD and their biological parents - both mother and father need to participate. We are also looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who are typically developing and both of their biological parents to serve as a control group.
If you and your family are eligible for participation, you will be asked to come to a lab at the Neuroscience Institute at Alliant International University. You and your child's other parent will be asked to complete consent forms and questionnaires about your own behaviors; this should take you each about 25 minutes. You will also be given questionnaires about your child's behaviors. Only one parent needs to fill out these questionnaires and should take about 25 minutes complete. You, your child, and your child's other parent will complete a cognitive test, which will take about 30 minutes. Each of you will then play some games on a computer. This will take each person about 30 minutes. Your child's participation will take approximately one hour. Your participation and that of your child's other parent will take approximately one and a half to two hours.
After your child completes his tasks, he will receive a $20 cash gift as an appreciation for his participation. Once you and your child's other parent have completed all tasks, you will each receive a $10 gift card as a token of appreciation for your participation.
