MSU Extension welcomes new 4-H Supervising

and Staff Development Educator

On May 22, 2017, MSU Extension welcomed its newest 4-H Supervising and Staff Development Educator, Diane Wisnewski. She will provide supervision and staff development to 4-H program coordinators in Districts 11 and 12 (Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties).

Wisnewski has an MS in Administration and Leadership and an MS in Sports Administration. She has significant work experience in administrative leadership, supervision and staff development. Most recently, she served as the Director of Extension Centers and Programs for Wayne State University. She has also worked in administrative/leadership roles at Macomb Community College and served as the Head Women's Basketball Coach for Wayne State University. Through these positions and throughout her career, Diane has demonstrated excellent skills in developing, training, and supervising staff, developing community partnerships, volunteer recruitment, and designing and implementing educational programs.

Educators Jackie Martin and Kathy Jamieson will work closely with Wisnewski as she transitions into her new role. Wisnewski will mainly be working out of the MSU Extension office in Pontiac.

District 11 Coordinator changes

There have been a few adjustments to MSU Extension's District 11 leadership. As of July 1st, Richard Wooten's District Coordinator responsibilities will focus solely on Wayne County. Ed Scott has been promoted to District Coordinator for Macomb and Oakland counties.

Wanted: OAC trip volunteer for military 4-H club

One of our military 4-H clubs is looking for an adult volunteer to assist on its annual summer Outdoor Adventure Challenge (OAC) trip from August 14-18. This year, they will be following the "Fred Meyer Rail to trail" from Grand Rapids to Cadillac with 2 middle school teen (MST) staff and 12 youth. The adult volunteer (18 +) will need to be a 4-H background checked volunteer and will need to complete military paperwork as well. They will be riding with the youth the 90 miles along with an MST staff member and will be tent camping. If you are interested please contact Jeran Culina at 586-469-5979.

Backpacking Volunteers Wanted

Macomb County 4-H is looking for volunteers to become

certified in the 4-H Outdoor Adventure Challenge activity of backpacking. Volunteers will co-lead day hikes in South Eastern Michigan and a backpacking trip once a year in the spring-fall. Those who are interested will need to go through a background check and a certification process. Please contact Seth Martin at (586) 783-8163 for more information.

Junior Gardener Club starts July 6th

The Junior Gardener Club, provided by Macomb County MSU Extension, will meet at the Max Thompson Family Resource Center, 11370 Hupp Avenue, Warren, from 9 a.m.-Noon from July 6-August 31. All youth ages 5-19 are welcome.

While engaged in fun activities, participants will develop a love for gardening, a respect for their environment, and cultivate their minds. Junior Master Gardener curriculum and Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! curriculum will be used.

Armada Fair information

Armada Fair volunteers wanted: Have you been interested in helping at the Armada fair? 4-H, FFA and other youth organizations that participate in the fair are looking for superintendents and judges for youth projects entered in the fair. We are currently looking for judges for our vet Science projects, educational projects, natural resource projects, culinary arts projects and photography projects. Also, we are looking for superintendents for horses and dairy goats. Professional expertise is not required, but judges should having experience in the project area they are judging. Exhibit Barn Sign-Up: Sign up for a shift in the Exhibit Barn at the Armada Fair at http://bit.ly/2rq9Uyb .

Teen Clerk Sign-Up: Teen Clerks, 4-H ages 13 and older, are needed for judging day at the Armada Fairgrounds on August 13th. Teen clerks help with Cloverbud project judging, transport projects from the judging area to the Exhibit Barn, and assist with other general tasks. Coffee Cart Fundraiser/Shaving Sales Sign-Up: Sign up for a shift at the 4-H Youth Council's Coffee Cart and shaving sales fundraisers at http://bit.ly/2qFSLiT .

Project books are to be turned in to the MSU Extension office no later than July 17th (third Monday in July every year). Project books are mandatory for dogs, cats and pocket pet projects only. If youth have multiple animals of the same species, all animals will be in the same project book.

Set-up for Barn 15 and the Horse Barn displays is August 9-12. Clubs may begin setting up between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. The Barn is CLOSED at exactly 10 p.m. 4-H club display boards in Barn 15 can be no larger than 4x6 feet and will be hung portrait.

2017 Wilton Award Department 71 Culinary Arts: Wilton Enterprises is pleased to help support the Armada Fair in the Decorated Cakes Division. Wilton's "Best of Class" awards are offered for winning cakes/cupcakes with some type of bag and tip or rolled fondant cake decorating.

Fair Clean-Up/Set-Up and Judging Dates

Volunteers needed before and during Armada Fair

Leaders, it's time to line up your club helpers for pre-fair and fair dates!

Fair clean-up is Sunday, July 9th from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Armada Fairgrounds in Armada.

We will be sweeping barns, pulling staples on risers, cleaning glass cases and other displays, raking leaves, pulling weeds, picking up debris on fairgrounds, etc.

Things to bring: rakes, brooms, gloves, pliers, screwdrivers, cleaning supplies, etc.

Fair set-up is Sunday, July 30th from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Armada Fairgrounds in Armada.

We will be setting up Barn #12, removing staples on table tops, papering tables with plastic tablecloths, determining where each club will set up their display, setting up club displays, as well as any last-minute set up in other barns.

Things to bring: heavy duty staplers, staples, nails, screws, extension cords, hammers, screw drivers, pliers, straight pins, peg board hooks, as well as scissors, pens, pencils, string, tape, markers, clips, cleaning supplies, etc.

Sunday Judging is Sunday, August 13th. Each club should be represented on this day. Volunteers will be helping clerk, carry exhibits back to barns, and tag with appropriate ribbons. Be sure judge signs Department book, return judge's books to Fair Office.

Sunday, August 13th: Arrange Barn #12 - Be sure tags are unfolded so that names can be seen, clean rods before hanging quilts and pin to secure. Ribbons should all be visible on all items. Be sure tag and ribbons are visible such as on lower corner of quilts or on the front of picture frames. Arrange entries in the barn after judging is complete. Be sure all ribbons are on each item and clearly visible. Set up fencing to secure areas.

Monday, August 14th through Sunday, August 20th , volunteers shall assist in clerking ALL youth shows, passing out ribbons/trophies and manning all gates, most importantly the horse arena gates and anything else required during the shows.

Check-out is Sunday, August 20th: Assist collecting items for exhibitors. Match tag numbers to items. Perishables are to be tossed out. Attach ribbon to tags for pick up. Clean-up on Sunday night is mandatory.

Model Rocketry Classes Open to All 4-H/FFA Students in Macomb County

TO ALL ROCKET MEMBERS: YOU MUST ATTEND AT LEAST ONE FLIGHT DAY!!! Leaders will not automatically be in the park on flight days. They will only be there if you call and notify Nancy Davis, 4-H volunteer, at least 24 hours in advance (586-784-9410 or [email protected]).

The 2017 4-H/FFA Rocketry Project flight schedule is below. All flights will be held at the Ray Township Park on Wolcott Road just north of 29 Mile Road. -- must park in Park lane, not by the library.

1st Flight Wednesday, July 19th 6 p.m.

2nd Flight Wednesday, July 26th 6 p.m.

3rd Flight Wednesday, August 2nd, 6 p.m.

You may bring rockets from prior years to fly, but they will not be eligible to show at the fair.

2017 State 4-H Dog Show

This annual event - presented each August by Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development - provides participants with opportunities to:

Present dogs in the following classes:

Leader Dog/Service-Dog Puppy
Freestyle
Junior Showmanship
Obedience
Rally
Agility
Brace
Teams
Cloverbud

Display honesty, respect for others, good sportsmanship, understanding of the humane and ethical care and treatment of animals, and their ability to follow 4-H policies and procedures
Participate in free Educational Posters and Photography Contests

Who Should Attend?

Exhibitors must be Michigan 4-H'ers (but not necessarily enrolled in a 4-H dog project) aged 9 to 19 years, as of January 1, 2017.
Cloverbud Division youth must be 5 to 8 years old, as of January 1, 2017.
4-H members can show up to two dogs (5 months or older) of any breed.
Of course, spectators are welcome!

What Is the Cost of the Show?

The nonrefundable registration fees are $6 per dog and $10 per class. Camping is available at the MSU Pavilion for $30 per night (Friday and Saturday only)

How Does Someone Register?

Registration forms (for participants and show sponsors) are available in the show catalog found on the Michigan 4-H web site . Youth must fill out entry forms completely and take the documents to the local MSU Extension office by July 21, 2017. To be accepted, entries must have the following:

A complete entry form, found in the 2017 State 4-H Dog Show Catalog
A copy of proof of vaccination (this is generally an itemized receipt or certificate from the veterinarian) for each dog entered (participants may bring up to two dogs)
Payment of class fees (to ensure all applicable fees are paid, check the math on the entry form).
