Sedums are often confused with succulents. The sedum is a hardy perennial, wintering outdoors. Succulents are annuals requiring indoor over- wintering.

Mixing succulent varieties in containers make them captivating, with low maintenance as a bonus! Bring them indoors for the winter.
Did You Know...
Just as succulents can be overwintered, so can certain tropical plants, such as the lemon or lime tree in your patio container. Move it to a shady outdoor spot for a few weeks before washing it down and bringing it indoors to a sunny location for the winter. Adding humidity to its environment will help. Some of the dwarf citrus trees seen in Europe in the summer are over 60 years old, since this overwintering process can work well!

Myles of Smiles

Grandson Myles is comfortable in the teepee surrounded by corn, bean, and squash plants. Known as the "three sisters", the synergistic benefit of planting these together will yield more food and need less water and fertilizer than if planted separately. Myles digs it.

August, 2017
"A late summer garden has a tranquility found no other time of year," wrote William Longgood. He is also known for the saying, "Dreams and dedication are a powerful combination." We think the late summer garden presents the net results of both the dreams for the growing season and the dedication to making the best of it!

Our "edible lab", shown above, was designed to offer a presentation of a functional and tranquil edible gardening space, for anyone to visit.

This month we focus on edibles and late-blooming perennials. It's so fun to enjoy what we are harvesting now, but it's also not too late to plant a few cool-season veggies with short maturing life cycles. Kale and veggies from the cabbage family are good choices for planting at this time of year. Cold-tolerant veggies can actually taste a bit sweeter when grown in cooler temps. The U of M extension service provides a more detailed list of veggie options to plant now.

Get a jump start with our Fall veggie starter plants! We have a variety of cabbage, spinach, radishes and other goodies to accelerate the growing process.

Drought-tolerant plants from the sedum or succulent family are also fun to focus on at this time of year. We just received a new supply of unusual and interesting succulents! Check out more information about sedums and succulents in our "Did You Know" section.

For our fine-gardening clients, we are busy planning our transition to Fall container plantings and Spring flowering bulbs.
