The Austin Liquors Wine Spotlight
W elcome to Eno-Files, an unpretentious look at wines from around the world complete with both deals and puns, brought to you by the good folks in the wine department at Austin Liquors!

     Y
ou may not realize it, but after the 4th of July wine sales fall off a cliff until at least October.  It's true for us, sure, but it's also true for our wholesalers, who have plenty of excellent wine that needs to disappear before sales pick up again in the fall.  Two weeks ago I went to a closeout tasting ready to make offers, and walked away with some true diamonds in the rough... and now we've got some of the best values of the year lined up for the summer Eno-Files features!  Let's kick things off with a bang: the 2009(!) vintage World's End Merlot Reserve.

Haven't had a Merlot since you saw Sideways?  For shame!  Some of the finest wines in the world are made from Merlot, including the 1961 Cheval Blanc St Emilion Miles saves throughout that film (an inside joke for the cork dorks).  And the lead winemaker for World's End is also the winemaker at Chateau Teyssier, home of the $200-a-bottle Le Dome St Emilion Grand Cru... a Merlot.  So, by choosing a cool, maritime site at the southern tip of Napa, World's End uses its French experience to mimic the slow ripening of Bordeaux fruit in the richer, sunnier California terroir, skillfully straddling the line between Old World tradition and New World exuberance.  In other words, this is no-joke, world-class wine.

T he 2009 World's End Merlot Reserve pours a clear, deep garnet hue with rich purple reflections.  The nose is clean and intense, with fresh notes of blackcurrant jam, plum, and chocolate mingling with savory hints of basil and green olive.  The wine is dry and full-bodied, with a mouthfeel that is velvety without being viscous, and is balanced by soft, refined tannin and refreshing acidity.  The flavors are harmonious to the nose, evolving toward blackberry jam, fig, forest undergrowth, and thyme throughout an especially long finish.  Pair with tender red meat, especially filets, or try basting a London broil with balsamic vinegar to highlight the wine's savory complexity.  This wine is drinking at its peak now but will last another 3-5 years, and carries a 92 Point score from Stephen Tanzer.

Now, here's the deal!

T he 2009 World's End Merlot Reserve is list-priced at $44.99 and the lowest advertised price in the country
is $34.97  b ut , by buying everything the wholesaler had left, we're able to offer it at $24.99 on the shelf.  Then, for the three days following receipt of this email (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 7/6-7/9), we're going to offer two special price tiers: buying three bottles will bring the price down to $21.24 apiece, while buying six will bring the price down to $19.99  a bottle!   We received a total of 15 six-bottle cases, so there is a chance we'll sell through everything this weekend - if you want to try this beauty, now's the time.

If you'd like to place an order please click this link or reply to this email with your name, contact information, and the Austin Liquors location most convenient for you and we'll let you know when your order is ready for pickup.  Remember, when this wine sells out we can't order more, and after Sunday this offer is gone!
